Megan leaned over the table to get a closer view of the metal. "Awesome. How great would it be to win one of those bad boys?" She said, observing the prize. "Now, uh." Megan leaned back in her seat, cracked her knuckles, and rested her hand behind her head. "If you ever need anymore practice, I'm betting Bluebreeze would love an excuse to reach full speed." Megan grinned. She was actually suggesting that she and Bluebreeze raced Tryggr and Moonseed. They would be racing an older, more experienced rider that has a lot of control with a larger, probably stronger and faster, Deadly Nadder. Megan was only a young Viking-In-Training that has sloppy riding with a goofy dragon. Either way, Tryggr said she would always train. Megan and Bluebreeze could use the practice, too. Megan tried to think back, "I don't think I ever allowed Blue to go full speed when I was on. Who knows, maybe he has a few tricks up his sleeve, er, wing." She happened to have a few tricks, too. Since Megan studied dragon species a lot, she knew different species strengths and weaknesses. Moonseed was a Deadly Naddder like Bluebreeze so their common weaknesses and strengths would be the same, making it a fair race.
Tryggr felt a gleaming grin tug at the corner of her lips. She had always considered herself more mild than wild, but the promise of a race always managed to bring out her more reckless side.
"If you wanted to race all ya' had to do was ask. Rider versus rider, nadder versus nadder. Could be fun, dontcha think?"
It would be a bit unbalanced of course. Age and experience gave her and Moonseed the upper hand, but mom always said not to count her chickens before they hatched. Of course she had more often than not been talking about actual chickens, but still...
Tryggr was not the studious type nor a deep thinker by any stretch of the imagination. The decisions she made were determined by gut instinct. When something gave her a good feeling, she went for it, and she had a good feeling about this.
"There's a place I like to with Moonseed sometimes. Aren't a lot of riders out here to race but from time to time we get a challenge and we take it out to one of the lower mountain peaks. It's high enough so you can get a good view and not have to worry about dodging trees, but low enough so that the air isn't too thin to fly. Only thing ya' gotta worry about is, well, the occasional landslide." She shrugged. "Occupational hazards, yeah?"
(When the race starts, I was thinking we can use the dice to see who gets an advantages, who faces an obstacle, and overall who wins.)
"It sounds like a pretty good spot for racing. Bluebreeze and I have never been in a real race, or even a challenge race like this one. Like you said, not too many riders race. I don't live in the mountains like you, but I never just go out searching for a racer." Megan sat straight up in her seat and placed her hands on the table.
"So for the race it'll be a the-rule-is-there-is-no-rules or whatever you said. Oh, and don't slow down, 'accidently' start late, or in any way help me out because I'm younger." Megan said seriously. Not a single hint of a joke on her face. That was the one thing that ticked her off the most.
"As for the path, are we racin' in a loop," Megan drew a circle on the table with her finger, "or race from the peak to your place?" She drew an odd zig zag line with her finger. She wanted to make sure she knew everything before they started. How embarrassing if she went the completely wrong way, or lost because the whole time she had to stay behind to watch where Tryggr was going.
(Sounds good to me. Just let me know what to roll, if we're using multiple dice, and when.)
"Let's stick to a loop," Tryggr replied. "Racing from point A to point B and back again can be tricky, having to make those sharp turns and all. Even if we're not playing a high stakes game right now," Based on the look on Megan's face, she didn't dare voice her fears that her normal rough style of racing would be too much for her. "It's better to play it safe."
Well, it was true. And she certainly wouldn't be holding back. Good or bad, right or wrong, she liked showing off and speeding up both too much to hold back.
Standing up, Tryggr flitted up the ladder and fished a helmet out from under the bed. Safety first, plus the added benefit of smashing down that hair of hers. Her eyes strayed to the clasp on the door to the landing pad.
"Just say the word and we can be on our way, Meg. Moonseed here is always ready for a new challenge, and so am I."
As if sensing the energy, or maybe taking the cue from seeing his human putting on her helmet, the larger nadder roared happily and shook his spiked tail in excitement.
Megan nodded, "Alright, we'll do a loop. So, Bluebreeze and I will follow you to the mountain peak and we loop around there." She watched Tryggr head to the ladder. Megan slipped over to the small pile of chicken fat left for their dragons. She scooped a hand full in to her pocket before following Tryggr up to the second floor to meet with her Deadly Nadder. She grabbed her bag strapped to Bluebreeze's saddle and dug through it to find her helmet. "I knew I had it in there somewhere." Megan said, places the helmet on her head.
"Come on, Blue, we're going for a ride." Bluebreeze happily walked up to his rider. He pushed his snout up to Megan's pocket. "Not now." She whispered, pushing him away. He snorted, but obediently lowered himself to allowed Megan to climb up.
Megan sat herself on Bluebreeze's back. She strapped herself to the saddle. "Get ready." Megan said and scratched Bluebreeze's side. Bluebreeze stretched his wings out. He flapped his wings a few times to waited to fly a bit impatiently. She led Bluebreeze to the platform. "Okay, let's go. Bluebreeze is definitely ready to fly. Lead the way." She motioned to the mountain.
(Sorry this took me a while. My first post didn't make it somehow.)
It didn't take much to get Moonseed into his saddle and into the air. It never did. Moonseed had all the love of flying and the sensation of speed that Tryggr did, with nearly twice as much pent up energy on any given day.
The dragons and riders, the elder taking the lead, made their way swiftly to the mountain peak. Tryggr quickly, and with a little more haste than was ideal, surveyed the route that they'd be flying for obstacles. It was really just a pre-race ritual to settle her nerves, because once they were in the air anything could happen. No matter how much preparation they did there was still no accounting for the finicky mountain weather.
The pairs settled on a snowy ledge that served as the starting line. They marked the spot with a line drawn into the snow and a tail spike stuck upright into the ground like a flagpole without a flag, a marker able to be seen from the sky.
"Once around the mountain. First one back wins. Anything goes." Tryggr reminded her, more as a formality than anything. "Ready... Set...
Bluebreeze opened his wings and flew after Moonseed and Tryggr. He let the wind take him to the mountain peak for most of the ride to safe his energy. He would need all of his energy to race with Moonseed. When he landed on the snowy peak, he dug through the snow so only dirt was under his feet. He was never liked the snow.
Megan watched Tryggr ride Moonseed around the mountain once. "We will just stay here." She called as they left. She pulled a strip of chicken out of her pocket. Bluebreeze know exactly what it was. He wagged his tail back and forth and snapped at it. Megan pulled her arm back. "It's not cheating if you eat. There are no rules so we can't cheat. You agree with me, right Blue?" She asked her dragon. He snapped again at the chicken, but failed to reach it. "Of course you agree with me. Who knows maybe Moonseed is eating chicken right now." Bluebreeze was waiting with his mouth open. "Here." Megan tossed one piece in his mouth, than two more, and another.
Bluebreeze had eaten the chicken by the time Tryggr and Moonseed returned. Megan listened to the few rules again. "Ready... Set..." "Go!" Megan yelled and they flew off.
The dragons took off side by side with their eager riders in tow. Tryggr was pretty confident by the first flap of their wings, but right from the get go Megan and Bluebreeze proved to be a bit more than she bargained for. They took the lead, most likely making use of each of their lighter, more agile forms, Tryggr evaluated.
The younger racers had aerodynamics on their side, it seemed, cutting ahead with ease, but the older pair weren't easily discouraged. Tryggr gave Moonseed a persuasive kick in the haunches, jerking her body forward and lifting up a little on the saddle.
With a little effort Moonseed was practically nose-to-tail with Bluebreeze, not near enough yet to make a mad dash for the front, but they were getting there. Anyway the race had only just begin. There'd be plenty of time to get ahead, and perhaps it was just as well they save some energy for a later leg of the race.
"Not bad!" she called ahead, yelling against the roar of the wind and her pulse booming in her ears, not even sure if she could be heard over the roar.
She shielded her eyes from the midday sun reflecting off the snowbanks with a raised hand and looked out at the open sky ahead and the slope of the mountainside they circled. She felt a sudden burst of adrenalin and tightened her grip on her reigns.
Megan and Bluebreeze were in the air. Bluebreeze flapped his wings and flew past Moonseed and her rider, Tryggr. He felt a burst of energy from wing tip to wing tip, so he was going to let it out. The spiked frill on his head pushed forward.
Megan was some what surprised herself when she was ahead. She yelled out it joy of the speed. "Whoa!" The chicken must have been enough to maximize his speed. She held on tight as they started to turn. She brushed the few loose pieces of hair out of her face as she turned to look at her opponent. She could just make out what Tryggr said by her lips. Megan smirked at the compliment, but turned to focus on the path ahead when they were catching up. She led Bluebreeze closer to the mountain to make the path shorter. Tryggr and Moonseed were picking up speed. "Come on." She said to Bluebreeze, but with the wind it sounded like a lost whisper. She leaned forward and allowed Bluebreeze to move as needed. His wings were like a blue blur flapping so fast.
Megan looked back again. She needed to figure out a way to block Tryggr's pass.
