NAME: Sara Jomsborg (Sar for short)
AGE: 16.
ORIGIN: Berk.
OCCUPATION: Apprentice shipbuilder.
GENDER & SEXUALITY: Female, Heterosexual.
LIKES: The ocean, fishing, playing the lyre (most of her spare time is spent trying to master this instrument), learning about Viking history, the smell of the ocean, cleaning, dusting and the like.
DISLIKES: Socks, board games, itchy Snoggletog sweaters, sudden or loud noises, pan flutes.
STRENGTHS:
Knows how to navigate the seas- Sara picked up this from her father who taught her to navigate the seas with or without a compass.
Attention to small details- Sara is meticulous, but not a perfectionist.
Dedication- Since you can’t make a ship in one night, Sara has developed deep dedication to her work. This also translates to her friendships and relationships between others, staying loyal all the way through.
Musical talent- Since Sara spends her spare time practicing her lyre, she is accustomed to how to play it and producing her own music. Sometimes she plays for the other shipbuilders at break.
WEAKNESSES:
Inability to swim- Although Sara has been near open water for most of her life, she’s never been taught to swim.
Oblivious to body language or social cues- Sara isn’t a very social character, therefore doesn’t understand cues given by her peers. Sassy remarks usually follow because of her misunderstandings.
Lack of sensitivity towards others- Because of her sassy nature, Sara isn’t very sympathetic to people she knows.
Stubbornness/Arrogance- Sara is a take-charge kind of character, and likes to do things all on her own. This can be her downfall, doing things by herself that should really be done with the help of others.
FEARS:
The Forest- It’s scary and shadowed; a place where you can easily get lost and never return home for days. Her lack of knowledge of edible plants and how to hunt on her own have also kept her from exploring this place, solidifying her fear of the unknown.
Not being recognized for her shipbuilding- One of her many ambitions, becoming a well-known shipbuilder, comes with this massive fear.
Insects- Sara irrationally fears insects of any kind; flying, walking, scuttling, you name it, she hates it.
Drowning- This fear goes along with her inability to swim. She has reoccurring nightmares of being set out to sea in a sailboat, and not soon after it falls apart, Sara left to drown.
AMBITIONS:
Build her own ship- She builds with her father and father’s friends, never designing and building her very own ship before. She knows this will take years to accomplish.
Being a well-known shipbuilder- After all of her hard work, Sara wishes to become a famous shipbuilder across the archipelago.
Becoming a voyager/traveler- Once she “adopts” her very own ship, Sara wishes to travel the seas.
Building relationships- Sara doesn’t have many close friends, aside from those she made during childhood and her dragon. She hopes to make more close friends as her adventures continue on Berk.
SECRETS:
Collection of shells- Though it seems fit for Sara because she’s always close to the shore, you wouldn’t notice this when you first meet her. She keeps the shells hidden in a model sail ship she was given on her first birthday, resting on her bedside table.
Can’t cook- Sara has been taught cooking skills from her aunts, but simply blows things up when she touches them in the kitchen.
OVERALL PERSONALITY:
Sass: Sometimes uncontrollable, Sara isn’t afraid to open her mouth and say something cheeky. This can be a problem though, as it has gotten her in trouble multiple times.
Kindness: Although rude and full of spirit, this girl can deliver some kind words to those whom deserve it.
Stubbornness: Sara has many opinions, and takes a lot to change them. Someone who can really show her a new perspective can change her mind in an instant.
Loyalty: After Sara lets you into her life, she’s staying in yours.
Trust: Sara trusts only those she’s been friends with for a long time, and knows they aren’t going to turn around on her and stab her in the back. Sara herself can be trusted, so long as her partner hasn’t challenged that bond.
Love for knowledge: Sara seems to like things that are mysterious and hard to find answers to. One being the ocean. She always wonders what’s on the ocean floor, what’s beyond their archipelago and why the ocean is so deceiving. She is a very curious girl with a big imagination.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:
Height: 5 foot 3 inches (160cm)
Weight: 120lbs (54kg)
Scars: Sara has several scars on the tips of her fingers and hands from nails and hammering her hands several times.
Hair: Her hair is very frizzy, and pretty unmanageable. It is a light strawberry blonde colour, with many highlights of bright blonde from exposure to the sun. To tame her long locks, they are normally thrown up in some up-do, typically a bun or braid.
Eyes: Sara’s eyes shine bright blue, with a halo of gold dancing around her pupil. Her eyebrows are large and unkempt, as well as very expressive.
Face: Her face is round, with chubby cheeks dotted with an abundance of freckles. The bridge of her nose is as smooth as a ski slope which comes to a rounded point. She has both earlobes pierced with small gold hoops.
Build: Sara is quite muscular, considering she has to carry around a lot of wood planks and tools to build ships. Her muscles aren’t totally noticeable, but can surprise people who try to help her. She is on the short side, but her strength makes up for this.
Clothing:
Top: Sara sports a brown knit sweater. The neckline is high. She keeps the bottom tucked into her belt. The sleeves are long, but she rolls them up when she works.
Belt: Sara wears a utility style belt while she works (which, let’s be honest is basically all the time). On one side, there are pockets for small objects such as screws, bolts and nails (*cough*or shells to collect*cough*). The other side has a larger pocket, for bigger objects. Some loops run around the back, able to hold various handheld tools. Some clips attach to the belt as well. Her pocket watch and compass accompany two of the seven clips available.
Bottoms: Because she is always on the move, she wears a pair of forest green leggings with leather kneepads sewn to them.
Boots: Sara’s boots are average Viking boots. Thick fur covering the outside on her legs, the boot made of hide. Extra cushioning is added to the inside of her boots, so her feet don’t get as sore while she works.
Armguards: Under her sweater, she wears woven leather arm guards.
Accessories: A necklace with 3 iridescent opal on each side, with a large dragon tooth at the end. She found the tooth, not knowing much about it.
HISTORY:
Birthday: April 9th
Place of Birth: In her home on the west side of Berk village.
Childhood: Sara was a very active child. From the moment she could walk, she really couldn’t stop. Sara lived for adventure. She loved recreating old tales about Berk hundreds of years ago with her friends. They defeated Berserkers, discovered new lands and dragon species in their fantasies. Every night before bed, her mother would read her stories of the old chiefs of Berk, and how they helped shape the way the island was run to this very day. Her favourite stories to hear were of Hiccup; the very first Viking to ever train dragons. The stories flooded her imagination, but she was always left to wonder if some were just legend.
At about age five or six, Sara was introduced to her father’s work. He showed her his very first ship and let her explore it. The amazing skills her father acquired amazed and intrigued her. Her father soon taught her the basics of shipbuilding and wayfinding, and her knowledge has grown ever since.
She picked up her mother’s old lyre at the age of eight. This was one thing her mother taught her that Sara really picked up on. Her fingers easily worked on plucking and strumming the strings as they did hammering nails into planks on a boat.
As a child, and still well into her teens, Sara wishes to train a dragon of her own. She has yet to come across one, as she doesn't explore very much outside of the shores, and isn't brave enough to tame a wild flame.
Adolescence:
Sara was a studious Viking, reading all the books in the Berk library. She enjoyed reading more than the average Viking who could, and took advantage of every opportunity to read. She loved learning.
In her early teens, she became an apprentice in shipbuilding, under the watchful eye of her master. Sara learned to love the trade she worked in, and the things around it. She admired the big blue ocean because of its mystery; how far did it go? How deep did it go? Why was there parts so calm, and others so brash and unsafe? She explored the shore during breaks. Her obsession with shells started when she was eleven, when she found a very large conch while exploring one day. She likes shells because there are many questions to ask and answer. They are a mystery, much like the sea.
As a teen, Sara developed a theory that her aunt Magnus had something against her because every year at Snoggletog, she was given a hideous sweater. The kind with the shiniest beads sewn on in no particular pattern, itchy fabric and happened to smell like rotten… something. Maybe it was all the failed attempts at cooking and blowing up her kitchen that made her aunt bitter.
FAMILY:
Mother: Sara didn’t spend very much time with her mother, Hadley. Her mother wanted Sara to be a real lady; learn to cook, sew and knit and stay at home. Her mother thought this would make her daughter suitable material for a husband when she grows up. Sara did not like those ideas at all, so she ran to her father’s arms.
Father: You very much could say Sara is a daddy’s girl, but she’ll deny every bit of it. Gilan, Sara’s father, introduced her to ship building and wayfinding at an early age. They have a very strong bond. Gilan himself is a quiet man, mostly keeping to his family and close friends. He is well-known throughout the shipbuilder community, though, as he typically teaches the younger children the ways.
Brother: Sara always loved to pester her older brother, Steffen. She still calls him by his pet name of “Stevie” in front of all his friends. In her heart, she loves him dearly, but never shows it in typical ways. Sara picks up her tomboyish attitude from her brother. As children, they used to wrestle with each other before bed to see who’d get the top bunk. Sara usually lost.
WEAPON OF CHOICE: Sara isn’t much of a fighter, but typically uses an axe if need be.
FIGHTING STYLE: She knows various martial arts moves, and likes hand-to-hand combat. She practiced with her brother when they were early teens. Sara couldn’t beat him wrestling as kids, but she definitely learned quickly and beat him in hand-to-hand combat. She excelled because of her strength and agility due to her short stature.
