HISTORY:
Both Jokul's mother and father had dragons. Only his mother's hobblegrunt, Shade, was actually small enough to fit in the house though. His father's monstrous nightmare was forced to stay out in the dragon pen. So Jokul grew up listening to the voices of his parents, and the gentle dragon who cared for him as though he were her own.
However, this was only enough for him to learn the basics of Dragonese. He didn't quite learn the language until the age of 11. Thankfully, his mother knew and taught him the rest.
For the next two years, he went around the village and helped those who couldn't talk to their dragons, and if the dragons wanted something their masters didn't provide. Most of the time, the dragons were happy with what they had, and other times the dragons ranted on about how their viking never went flying with them.
Jokul was flattered when people started referring to him as the Dragon Whisperer. Though it was a joke at first, considering he isn't the only one on Berk who speak Dragonese, but slowly, the more he helped, the more it stuck. Dragons began to seek him out and just talk to him. Many of them haven't had the chance to talk head-on with a human and have them respond.
But everything changed when Jokul was 14. His mother's hobblegrunt had left with the other dragons to breed, and returned with a single hatchling. Jokul dubbed her Starkad upon meeting her. The small, happy family only lasted a few weeks.
Jokul and Starkad had ventured off into the forest to explore, ignorant to the possible danger it involved. It was impossible to know a lone, injured zippleback would be stumbling through the same patch of woods as they were though.
By the time they saw the dragon, it was too late. The zippleback's gas had entered Jokul's eyes... and then it was ignited. He screamed in pain, just as Starkad did when the zippleback bit into her wing, tearing it beyond repair.
What the two didn't know, was that Shade had followed them, and dove into the trees when she heard them scream. Though Shade defended them until she was within an inch of her life, the damage had already been done. The attack had rendered Jokul nearly blind, and Starkad flightless.
Defending her young had cost the hobblegrunt mother her beauty. Scars are now littered across her body.
Though everyone learnt of the attack, no one knew of Jokul's injury. He'd kept it a secret, even from his own family. Not knowing this information, his parents got him to join the training academy.
To this day, he'll only tell the dragons about his injuries. He doesn't realize most of the vikings already know anyway.
WEAPON OF CHOICE:
•Bolas
--So he doesn't have to hit target directly in order to restrain them
FIGHTING STYLE:
•Because of his bad eyesight, he chooses to hang back and rely more on his hearing to determine where the target is located and how he will strike.

HISTORY:
Starkad was born into Jokul's family basically. Shade, her mother, is actually Jokul's mother's dragon.
Jokul and Starkad bonded almost immediately. At the time, Jokul had just finished learning Dragonese from his mother, so when Starkad began talking, he was overjoyed. The two of them would talk to each other all day.
When Starkad began growing, so did her energy. Even though she usually ran around the village terrorizing the chickens and sheep, Jokul was always running after her, trying to get her to stop.
As time went on, Jokul got tired of chasing her, and gave up getting her to stop. The only one who could do that was Shade.
After getting her injury, Starkad didn't let it stop her. Sure, she felt part of her was gone when she learnt she couldn't fly, but she could still run after the livestock and annoy Jokul.
(I realize parts of the history may be... "iffy"... but I tried. And If I have to, I'll change Starkad's species)
