PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:
Bragg is rather stout at 5'8 tall. He doesn't tower over others but he clearly brushes them aside with his 200lbs of athletic muscle that have been honed over the years. These muscles tend to be covered by metal armor forged to resemble dragon scales. He covers his armor with a large fur coat that maintains a hood over his head to maintain his mysterious appearance. Bragg has orange hair and eyes that shift from blue to green eyes, depending on what he is wearing. He also has a permanent scar across his chest, an old wound from a battle long-since forgotten.
Bragg is also missing his left hand, he usually has a hook piece attached as it is the most versatile.
HISTORY:
Bragg's birth name is Darius Nadir and he was born on the Isle of Fire and Brimstone. His father, Ulf, was the Marshall of the island and his mother, Svanhild, was a well respected maiden. Darius had an older brother, Rolf, who was supposed to become head of the family after Ulf passed away. Darius was groomed to be Rolf's right hand man, a stalwart ally that could be depended upon. Allies were few and far between those days. Political intrigue and court politics were a clear and present danger for everyone involved. Since Ulf was the King's Marshal, he was inevitably drawn into the politics by default.
The island itself was formed by a now dormant volcano that laid in the middle of several important trade routes. The locals built an expansive forge using the heart of the volcano to craft intricate pieces of metalwork easily. These pieces were sold off using the trade routes the island laid in the path of and the island prospered.
Darius was indoctrinated in the the ways of the forge as a boy. That is, when he wasn't regularly engaged in court politics or sneaking off to cause mischief with his brother. The devilish duo terrorized the court with their antics, much to the dismay of their father, for quite some time. Instead of scolding the boys, Ulf encouraged Rolf and Darius to continue their misbehavior but to temper it with considering the ramifications of their actions in the court. It would not be long until Rolf and Darius started feuds among the children they did not like while they gathered information for their father. All the while Svanhild, their mother, disapproved but was unable to stop them.
The boys grew up, as everyone must do eventually, and followed in their father's footsteps. They were trained in the art of war by Ulf and found they had a natural aptitude for war like their father. Rolf was groomed to take over the position as the King's Marshall when Ulf stepped down. Darius had a less impressive future for him as the Royal Guard Captain but it was no less important. Darius had the sworn duty of protecting the King and his family against all else. He was able to handpick the warriors who would serve under him and Darius dared to say that he led the finest warriors ever fielded by the Island of Fire and Brimstone. A statement that was tested in battle on more than one occasion.
It was after one of these battles where Darius and Rolf were victorious that he encountered a woman of breath-taking beauty. The woman's name was Alexis and she was a young maiden in the court of an allied nation participating in peace negotiations. The problem was that Alexis had already promised to another. A member of the Berseker tribe called Mad Max.
Naturally Darius saw this as a challenge. A challenge that Darius accepted. It took months of courting and it wasn't long until Darius came into direct competition with the Mad Max himself. Mad Max even told Darius to back off or there would be dire consequences. Unfortunately Darius was young and in love. He threw caution into the wind and followed his heart, winning the heart of the fair maiden Alexis.
The two soon had a son and he was Darius' pride and joy. His name was Trygve and Darius loved him above all else. He had never experienced the kind of love a father had for his son. Darius could not have been happier.
That happiness would not last however.
Mad Max marched upon the Island of Fire and Brimstone with a fleet of Berserkers. The island barely had time to react and Darius had to make the all important decision of to either protect his king or his family. He knew full well that the island could not repel the overwhelming forces of the Berserkers but he was oath-bound to protect the King. So he sent his family away to try and escape while he ran to his post to defend the King.
The battle spanned several days but eventually the Berserkers overwhelmed the defenders. The final battle ended with Darius and Rolf surrounded with what few men they had left in defense of the King as Ulf had already fallen in battle. The Berserkers broke their lines in one final charge but Mad Max made it a point to capture Darius and Rolf alive. They had special plans for the two of them.
Mad Max wanted to make Darius suffer. So he made Darius watch as his brother was slowly tortured to death. It broke his heart to see the brother he grew up with and loved slowly killed in a torturous manner to the point of breaking him. The worst part was that Mad Max soon revealed they weren't the only two they captured. They had captured Alexis and Trygve. They repeated the same process with each of them, saving Trygve for last.
Darius was destroyed, both mentally and spiritually, by each death but something snapped when it came to Trygve's turn. Darius had never been afforded the opportunity to rescue his brother or his wife. Heck he hadn't been afforded the opportunity to save his son either. This time he decided to make an opportunity. The viking severed his own hand to free himself from shackles and single-handedly defeated seven Berserkers when he came after Mad Max to save his son. But it was too little, too late. Mad Max cast Trygve into the fires of the volcano before Darius could reach them.
Perhaps it was the loss of blood or pure rage but the viking's memories became a little fuzzy after that. Bits and pieces come to him about what occurred afterwards if he concentrates hard. He remembers locking the door to a wooden building and setting it on fire with people inside. He remembers the repulsive smell of burning flesh and the cries of men and women trapped inside. Brutal, inhuman actions in combat. Unspeakable actions that he most certainly committed.
Darius eventually found himself adrift at sea with his arm bandaged, basic rations, and alcohol. It was enough to last the Viking as he drifted aimlessly until he washed ashore. He was half-dead from starvation and exposure and most likely would have died had he not been discovered by a curious Rumblehorn who picked up his scent. That Rumblehorn took Darius to shelter and brought Darius food while he recovered from his wounds. But it was quickly apparent to the dragon that the physical wounds weren't the only thing wrong with the human. Darius barely ate and hardly moved from his bed when he was getting better. The Rumblehorn grew tired of waiting for Darius to move on his own so he started nudging him out of bed.
Darius first resisted the Rumblehorn's promptings but the Rumblehorn grew more aggressive. The viking started pushing back and that was when things started spiraling out of control. Headbutter, with his thickened dragon skull, and Bragg, with his honed muscles and foolish pride, went back and forth for hours the pair will claim. Eventually the two mustered up one final, epic headbutt. The two clashed, stumbled, and both fell onto one another. "You're...pretty...good...Headbutter" Darius groaned, the Rumblehorn grunted back before passing out. The viking and the dragon found a mutual respect for one another that day. They also found a name for the Rumblehorn; Headbutter.
The pair remained on the island for a few more days until making their way to the nearest human occupied island. That island happened to be Berk. A nice, out of the way village where Darius made up a fake name to live out the rest of his life in peace.
