///
As for his alias Arden Olsson, he’s been living in Berk for a year. Many recognize him as a talented physician. If ever there’s a sufferer of pain or illness, Arden will gladly help mend them however he can. • Volgun’s accent is British, but he often imitates Scottish ones to blend with Scottish communities.
OVERALL PERSONALITY:
Probably Volgun’s most prominent trait is his unshakable composure. The man is a calculating and withdrawn individual who prefers observing others and keeping a low profile, rather than speaking or being the center of attention.
Most of his peers aren’t completely sure what he’s thinking or feeling most of the time. His reputation among them is that of a calculating and unemotional individual, and yet, Volgun expresses a fierce dedication to his work. To them, one thing is for certain: his loyalties lie with whatever remains of Mistwatch. He views any means to achieving their goal for reconstruction as a just cause - no matter who or how many lives are lost or corrupted in this process.
Aside from his formal exterior, there within lays a mischievous, and sometimes cruel streak as indicated by his frequent sarcastic remarks and dark humor. Oftentimes, its Volgun’s temper what makes him a truly dangerous man.
///
A content, patient, and outgoing physician whose serious dedication to helping others has gained him respect around Berk. Arden displays a constant concern for the well being of others: physically, mentally, and emotionally. He’s aware that not all wounds and ailments can be healed, but remains determined in mending as much as he possibly can.
The good doctor is polite, practical, and well mannered if not slightly controlling when others disobey his instructions in order to heal properly or stay healthy. Arden also has passive aggressive tendencies towards “unruly” patients as well, but dislikes conflicts so much as to keep opinions on them to himself and simply cope with it.
He seems more alert when dragons are nearby, but that doesn’t prevent him from going out into the wild in search for medicinal herbs.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:
He stands six foot three, weighing one hundred and seventy four pounds. Volgun bears a strong mesomorphic build, and he occasionally wears a pale green cloak made from dragon hide. Beneath that is his preferred attire that includes a patchwork cloth set of black trousers, a vest, a white (slightly bloodstained) blouse, and black leather boots.
Few have ever actually seen his face. Its either completely covered by a mask, or partially concealed by a hood. Volgun frequently hides his hands, since he’s missing most of his left ring finger and right pinky.
///
Arden is Caucasian with pale skin and an oval face shape possessing a strong jaw, high cheekbones, and a long aquiline nose. Like most Vikings, he has a beard, though it’s a simple van dyke style. His eyes are deep set, narrow, and grey in color beneath a pair of thick, arched eyebrows.
The doctor often wears his brunette (and slightly graying) hair tied back in a Viking-style braid. His attire is simple: a dark green, long sleeved V-neck cloth shirt, brown full-length cloth pants, and vest, leather shoes as well as a leather apron for whenever he performs surgery.
HISTORY:
Born October 24th on the island kingdom Mistwatch, Volgun (aged 47) was an only child living with his parents in a large community that suffered from frequent food shortages. “Survival of the fittest” was a common phrase among its people, as the rite of passage into adulthood was achieved through gladiatorial combat.
For Mistwatch, fighting was as much a form of entertainment as it was a process of eliminating the weak, bolstering one’s status, settling feuds, and gaining renown by spectators. From these trials Volgun and many other youths his age honed their skills as warriors starting at the age of thirteen: They first began by fighting one another, then stronger opponents when they were sixteen including wild beasts and prisoners. Among the strongest of the inmates was Esben Maulfist, a Viking who had known Volgun since their first fight when he was sixteen.
He was an aggressive yet gregarious man, and each match between them resulted in Volgun’s defeat, but never his death. He later learned that Esben and the King had made a public bet: if the Viking won three hundred matches in a row, then he would be set free.
This was obviously a public joke - Esben couldn’t count past twenty. And he was under the impression that the King would keep his word regardless by keeping count. That wasn’t the case however, and now Esben was refusing to kill even frail opponents like Volgun. As a prisoner, these matches were a monotonous form of torture that were faulty in measuring one's worth.
Esben called Volgun a ‘joke’ , then proceeded to chide mentors outside the ring. He admitted to his shortcomings, but boasted superior knowledge in proper training. The mentors took the his remark as a challenge that prevented his execution, and for the next ten years Volgun was re-matched against Esben until one would kill the other.
A disaster occurred during their time spent training: the iron ore mine, Mistwatch’s main resource, was collapsed by order of the King when miners had discovered a small cavern with an underwater tunnel leading to the ocean. This hollow contained what appeared as gelatinous masses that were, in fact, a clutch of dragon eggs. When the offspring emerged, they attacked the men, dragging them underwater.
Eight years followed before the beasts resurfaced one night and invaded the kingdom. Volgun’s mother died protecting him from a stray cannon fire that knocked him unconscious. Mistwatch’s army slew all but one dragon which killed the few remaining knights, including his father.
Volgun regained consciousness only to discover the entire city annihilated and
nearly everyone gone. Below ground, where the kingdom’s prison was located, he found the inmates still alive and unscathed. Most of them were dangerous Vikings, but they were also the only survivors he could find. Esben had broken out and was taking command, but Volgun challenged him for leadership. A fight broke out between the two which resulted in Volgun's victory, but Esben's life was spared.
With most of the convicts unified, they surfaced to find the last dragon. Major wounds from the fight had rendered the beast unable to fly and they imprisoned it. Since there were no previous records of its breed, Volgun wished to study their new enemy in case more arrived. Three weeks passed before the beast finally broke free and vanished into the ocean.
To this day, the city remains under construction by it's remaining populace. Volgun had his eye on the neighboring islands to fortify Mistwatch from dragons. He's most recently sailed to Berk disguised as a modest doctor from Visithug Territories whose identity he’d stolen after their murder for medical information on humans and dragons.
///
Arden hasn’t much to say about his past, only that he’s come from a long line of doctors in a western settlement. It was a dying practice, and so he decided to carry on this knowledge and inspire others to do the same.
WEAPON OF CHOICE:
• Small knives.
• A crossbow.
• Explosives & tripwire.
• Fists and feet.
• Bolas
FIGHTING STYLE:
The many weapons at his disposal and thirty-five years of combat experience makes Volgun an unpredictable adversary. He uses explosives as a means to redirect, distract, disorient, or trap his opponents. The eight knives he wields each have a blade six inches in length for close and mid-ranged combat as throwing projectiles. The bolas are generally used to catch people or disable dragons from flight.
Light weaponry and light armor made from dragon cartilage under his cloak on his chest, back and shoulders leave him highly evasive and agile. Acrobatics and hand-to-hand combat experience are used to outmaneuver and disable opponents. He sometimes uses a crossbow to fight, but it’s more often used to make zip lines whenever they’re needed.
///
Arden claims to have no fighting experience and states that a physician is just as important as any warrior.
