NAME: Gritspit the Grubby
AGE: 15
OCCUPATION:
- Viking in training.
- Apprentice cartographer specializing in cave systems – He only partakes in this because he likes to goof around in caves...he is not very good at it.
GENDER & SEXUALITY: Male and heterosexual.
LIKES:
- Cave exploration – He has been fascinated by caves since he was a young boy when he used to make them into dens and forts.
- Red meat – Any red meat really, in fact he would live off a diet of red meat if he could. The rest of you can keep the fish and the vegetables.
- Weird things – There is no rhyme or reason behind this fascination. If it is strange or freakish then you know he is going to love it. He even has a bizarre collection of oddities in his room (dried-up toads, pickled sheep eyes...that sort of thing).
- Likes to imitate dragon sounds – He cannot actually communicate with them in this way, he just likes doing it. This seems to amuse his dragon Fidget who in turn tries to imitate the goofy sounds his rider makes.
- Wrestling – Man or dragon, he will happily wrestle with anything...a head lock makes a great 'hello'.
DISLIKES:
- Vegetables – If handed to him he would look at you as if you have given him poison. He has to be 'tricked' into eating them.
- Water – That is not to say he is afraid to take baths or anything, but water in general unsettles him. Travel by water is probably his least favoured method due the sound of breaking or rushing water being what truly bothers him.
- Lectures – Or anything that requires long periods of concentration. He has been known to sneak off mid-convocation or if there is no escaping, make shadow puppets out of his hands.
- Chores – There is no point in asking him to do any real work for you unless slapdash unfinished was what you were going for.
STRENGTHS:
- Fearless of his surroundings – In the sense he will happily walk into the darkest of caves or scariest of forest without even thinking about it.
- Strong upper body strength – Thanks to all the climbing around in caves he is in quite good shape! He can easily scale a tree or a small cliff without much bother.
- Dauntless – He is not perturbed by the enormity or difficulty of a task. This is mostly down to ignorance of what is actual at stake due to his refusal to pay attention to the details.
- Great memory – Once he has been somewhere he will always remember how to get back there again. A lot of people do not realize how good his memory is due to the fact his short attention span leads them to believe he has forgotten what they told him to do.
WEAKNESSES:
- Has a very short attention span – This does not help when he is apprenticing in an occupation that requires a good attention to detail. He has a tenancy to get bored easily.
- Gets confused – He struggles to follow a lot of technical talk, in some cases loosing interest altogether. This doesn't mean he is stupid by any stretch of the imagination. It simply means you have to spell it out for him in a context he will understand (and find interesting enough to pay attention to)
- Armless – Gritspit has no aptitude for weapons and has never been trained to use them. Since he was taught that a real man should be able to achieve anything with his hands along he does not appreciate the hindrance this truly is. In reality the better armed opponent will always have an upper hand over Gritspit.
- Hasty – He will not listen to instructions and jumps into a situation unprepared. He is very hard to teach in this respect and the people who know him also know it is the tough lessions which will teach him the most.
FEARS:
- He was once trapped in a cave during a heavy storm and was almost drowned when the cave began to flood. To this day he is terrified of the sound of rushing water and has been known to go into a blind panic if confined in a small space upon hearing it (Dislikes being below deck on a ship for this reason). The issue is not so bad if he can see the source of the noise, but he will still be very jittery.
- His father. Although this is a fearful respect. His father has never shown any quarter to any of his sons and punishments are usually painful or shameful ones.
- Being out of his depth - His father has instilled a belief to all his sons that they should never be fearful of anything and would have the strength to overcome any situation. So when Gritspit finds that in reality this is not the case he can be overcome with fear and shame.
- Healers – One 'kindly' helped when Gritspit dislocated an arm. After much persuasion to get him to the healer with talk of 'it will only be quick' and 'you won't feel a thing' he felt brutally betrayed when the procedure proved to be agony. He has since feared and distrusted them.
AMBITIONS:
- To become ruler of an underground society of subterranean cave people – Probably not a very realistic ambition.
- To discover a new species of dragon living in one of the caves he is exploring. He is not hoping for much...any powerful, mountain sized dragon will do.
- To be able to one day conquer his fear of water so he can explore some of the deeper under-water caverns again. Although the combinations of pitch blackness, tight spaces, freezing water and tiny air-pockets is making that prospect look unlikely.
- To become strong enough to beat his father in a one on one grappling match.
- Be respected as a smart guy one day and have people actually look to him.
SECRETS:
- Gritspit is insecure about his intelligence and often fears he is failing at everything he tries. He often compensates for this by being overly boastful about his achievements and acts nonchalant when someone criticise him even thought he is feeling quite hurt inside.
- Very fond of his mother, more than he will ever admit to. He misses the more tender times he had with her before he was old enough for his father's brutal tutelage.
OVERALL PERSONALITY: On first meeting Gritspit he comes across as brash and boisterous. This is due to being the youngest of five brothers who are all jostling to been seen as manly warriors in their father's eyes. Gritspit does not want anyone new in doubt of his prowess just in case word to the contrary ever made it back to his father. Rudeness his father can forgive, weakness he would not.
But beyond that obnoxious façade someone would find a kid who given the flicker of an opportunity would go gallivanting with you on whatever crazy adventure you could concoct.
Gritspit is a curious and mischievous boy at heart who loves to play games and take part in anything that would distract him from contributing to society. Once something has him interested to will throw himself fully in the middle of it and would not be afraid to get his hands dirty in the process...just don't expect him to pay much attention to the rules or warnings.
He would be good friends with people who are like-minded, adventurous and willing jump first and ask questions later. Equally he could also befriend those who are more cautious and tentative about taking the first step. If you want someone to go in first and check the coast is clear, Gritspit is your guy.
Those he would find friction with are people who like to be the voice of reason. He hates people trying to talk him out of doing something stupid, it will just force him to do it anyway out of spite. Also those who over analyse situations can frustrate Gritspit who is impatient and just wants to get on with it already.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:Gritspit was fortunate enough to take after his mother rather than his father in facial features and not inherent Slabface's slumped forehead, flat nose and jowls. Instead Gritspit has his mother's heart-shaped face, hazel eyes and long red hair.
Physique wise he is top-heavy having spent much of his childhood either grappling with older brothers or clambering about in caves. Although not the gorilla build his father and brothers sport, his arms and chest in particular are shaped with hard, well-defined muscle.
He is respectfully tall with a bit more growing to do and slight enough to squeeze through any space wide enough for his shoulders. He wears light-weight leather in the form of a simple sleeveless over-coat and pants. He has matching leather bracers and boots bound tight with bronze buckles. He wears no loose hanging material as it has a habit of getting snagged and torn with his various activities.
HISTORY:Gritspits story begins with his father, Slabface the hammer arms. Slabface was a giant of a man with huge tree trunk arms and a face like a bulldog. He had strength in spades and is said to be able to rip trees out of the ground with his arms alone...or so Gritspit's mother would tell him. But for all his brawn what his father lacked was brains. Slabface was never a good student and the weapon masters, try as they may, could not get that impressive strength behind the edge of a weapon. Soon it was practically a joke and his father was looking at a shameful life of being sidelined in battle for the smaller but more weapon-able Vikings. But Slabface was a wilful, stubborn man and refused to make that his fate and set about creating his own crude fighting style to turn his own arms and fists into weapons themselves. After a rigorous time in various areas defeating his opponents with his own arms clad in heavy steel plated armour, he finally proved himself the warrior the weapon mater's refused to believe he could be.
A few years after his acceptance as a warrior he met Gritspit's mother Bjarnilla, an intelligent, well fleshed woman with pretty features and a blaze of long red hair. What attracted her to Slabface, Gritspit could never tell but they settled down together and had five sons, Gritspit being the last born.
Slabfrace being a stubborn man refused to allow any of his sons to partake in weapons training, especially after he spent his lifetime proving to the village that a warrior did not need a weapon. For this reason he began a brutal form of home tutelage to teach his sons the same strange battle techniques he himself developed and threaten to disown any who dare raise a weapon in battle. Unfortunately for Gritspit, along with the tutelage, Slabface also encourage a vicious rivalry in all his sons and being the youngest, he was an easy target for his brothers who wanted a quick practise with an easy victory.
The impact of this was that Gritspit had to spend most of his childhood trying ward off his sibling's rough style of brotherly affection and never really got to express himself as the cheeky mischievous boy he really wanted to be. The only place Gritspit could truly be himself was when he was hidden away in the strange network of caves that could be found in the cliffs a short distance from their house.
He had found the network of caves when he was too bruised and too tired to fend of his brothers anymore and retreated into the caves to shake their pursuit. Most would have been worried about becoming lost in the dark labyrinth but Gritspit, feeling his way along the walls and recording each turn he took with his keen memory easily managed to find his way back. It was not long before he had most of the cave network memorized and this became his new sanctuary where he could be himself and play and behave like a normal boy.
This was the spark of his natural curiosity and Gritspit would spend as much free time as he could exploring other caves and their surrounding areas. It was during this periods of exploration that he came across the dragon that would become his future companion.
While climbing out of a particular high crevice bordered by a bracket of pines he slipped and almost fell to his death. The thing that saved him from an early grave was a large basket-like structure suspended from one of the pine trees. Unfortunately the supports holding the structure gave in from the weight of the boys decent and upon hitting the ground it was crushed beyond recognitions. Gritspit did not realise it then, but that basket had been a dragon's nest and this particular nest was created by a Shrieking Glider. The Shrieking Glider males were busy that time of year building nests which they would then use to attract a mate and the owner of this particular nest came streaking down from the trees and began clawing and swiping at the boy. Not only that, it proceeded to chase Grispit home and the to stake him out from the roof of his own house.
For many weeks afterwards the dragon would wait for the boy from the roof and swoop upon him if he ever tried to leave the threshold. Even his family (apart for his mother) were unsympathetic to his plight, finding the whole situation a great source of amusement. Eventually Gritspit had to resort to throwing his breakfast out of the window to distract the disgruntled dragon so he could slip away unmolested.
It was one morning when the dragon had been particularly quick at polishing off Gritspit's breakfast that Gritspit turned around the find the dragon following him towards the caves. Although the dragon was giving the boy no indication it intended to attack him, he was not about to give it the opportunity. He ran off towards the safety of the caves with the dragon following close behind, chirping to itself in amusement. However the caves where no solace from the dragon's chase as the Shrieking Glider's ability to use echo locate allowed it to easily follow the boy in the dark and it's small size allowed it to crawl through any space the boy himself could fit. Eventually Gritspit gave up and stopped to confront the dragon who continued to stared at him and chirped to itself in amusement.
In exasperation he pleaded with the dragon to leave him alone but as he did so the dragon scrabbled towards him and snatched a paper wrapping out of his pocket that contained his lunch. It was then that Gritspit realised that all the dragon was really interested in anymore was his food which made sense as he had been feeding it consistently for the past month. Gritspit slumped to the ground in despair. He has been through so much hassle and hungry mornings just so this dragon could have a free meal and it was beginning to feel as through just about everyone wanted to give him a hard life. It was at that moment that the dragon must have sense how low Gritspit was feeling and stopped gobbling his lunch and peered at him through the darkness. After a while it crawled slowly up to him and spat out the half chewed remains of his lunch in his lap. At that point Gritspit could recognised someone giving him a break when he saw it and gave the dragon a grateful pat on the head.
From then onwards the dragon and boy would become friends.
WEAPON OF CHOICE: 'Rocky' and 'Rumble' his fists.
FIGHTING STYLE: He does not carry any weapons at all and instead fights with a number of unarmed combat techniques that he was taught by his father. One of the trademarks of his father's style is to clasp the hands together and swings his arms in the same manner one would while holding a war hammer. The style also includes a number of mixed techniques from boxing, wrestling and grappling.
DRAGON NAME: Fidget
DRAGON TYPE: Shrieking Glider
DRAGON APPEARANCE: Fidget, like all Shrieking Gliders, is quite small with a slim, stream-line body and long powerful wings. He has longer ears than the average Glider which are very mobile and expressive. He has large, flaired nostrils that are almost constantly a-twitch. His scales are a dark midnight blue with faint strips that zig-zag down the length of his back, his hide also fades at the muzzles, claws and tail tip. His belly and wing membrane are an apple green and show a bright contrast to his scales. His ears, nose and webbed tail are also a cool violet colour. For the most part he is a typical example of his breed.
DRAGON PERSONALITY: Shrieking Gliders have a strange mimicking habit naturally but Fidget take this to an extreme. He seems to pick up on exactly what Gritspit is thinking and will contribute in his own enthusiastic way. This makes for great story telling as Fidget will happily provide the sound effects to Gritspit's ghost stories or spooky silhouettes with his bat-like claws and wings. More often you will hear Gritspit's own hearty guffaw echoed by the gruffing of Fidget perched on his back or the boy's mischievous grin reflected in a dragons face peering over his shoulder.
For the most part it is hard to get a sense of Fidget's personality as he so often seems to make himself an extension of Gritspit's own character. But when the two are not of the same mind the dragon in Fidget really starts to show. Fidget is a selfish dragon who likes to hoard shiny objects that he weaves into his own nest. He will also not hesitate to snatch food from Gritspit or anyone else close by if he is hungry enough. He is also very wilful and will not be told he cannot do something. When Gritspit tried to get him to sleep outside, Fidget cut a Fidget-sized hole in the door with his cutting-flame and let himself back in. This trait in Fidget came sometimes lead to bickering between Gritspit and his dragon.
Fidget also likes to posture when he is around bigger dragons. He will puff himself up and swagger around them trying to make himself look impressive. A quick growl or snort usually sends him scurrying back to a safe distance however.
DRAGON TECHNIQUES:
- Piercing Shriek - Fidget can generate a high frequency shriek that can shatter objects at long range. If a person or animal is hit by a small burst it can knock the wind out of them and incapacitated them for a short while. If they are hit by a wide burst it can send them flying.
- Cutting Torch - Fidget has a short range blue flame which can cut through most materials. This cannot be used as a weapon but makes it very hard to keep Fidget contained. Only thick steel is impenetrable to Fidget's cutting-flame.
- Mimicking - Fidget, like other Shrieking Gliders, has well developed vocal muscles which allow it to create a wide cacophony of sounds. This allow it to replicate many of the sounds it hears with relative accuracy.
