NAME: Freyy Cloudkicker
AGE: 19
OCCUPATION: Watchtower Guard/ Textile crafting assistant
GENDER & SEXUALITY: Female, Bisexual
LIKES: Quiet days, Spiced Mead, Warm fire, Snow, and dragons
DISLIKES: Loud noises, Saltwater, Combat, and children.
STRENGTHS: Rope-work, Flying, Sensitive hearing, Precise shooting skills due to focus locks.
WEAKNESSES: Fragile skin, cannot swim, Sensitive hearing (loud noises can be cripplingly painful), focus locks when it isn't safe to be locked on one thing, poor hand-to-hand combat skills, Weak knees and ankles (due to 5 years of hard landings with her own weight stacked on her back).
FEARS: Loss of her hearing, hand-to-hand combat, Being unable to fly, Never seeing Valhalla
AMBITIONS: To die at an old age; To truly fly as a dragon does; To become a true legend; and to raise the next generation to see the world as she does.
SECRETS: Her frail build is due to over-focusing on projects, and forgetting to eat. She is unable to easily tear herself away from what she focuses on.
She doesn't know how to cook, due to being unable to keep focused enough on all the different parts of cooking long enough to learn how, without locking onto one single component.
OVERALL PERSONALITY: Freyy is a fast-moving, frantic girl with a tendency to lock her focus on one thing, and suddenly freeze in the middle of a situation. Her frantic behavior is there to keep her from spending long enough on any one thing to lock up. Generally, she will be bouncing from one focus to another fast enough to keep up with her own mental tangents, but in a blink can be locked onto a single thought, with next-to-nothing able to break her out of her focus. When she isn't focus-locked, she tends to be flighty and jumps around on verbal tangents. She switches over to a monotonal straightforward speech when she focus-locks.
Outside of work, Freyy tends to find herself sitting in the main hall with a mug of some hot beverage or another, and a few balls of yarn. This is one of the few times Buzzer will let her stay focus-locked, outside of sniping.
In the watchtower, she tends to move around constantly, eyes searching out anything out of place; ears listening for any sounds that might herald danger. During these times, her hands will usually be banging on the paneling and frame of the watchtower.
While flying, Buzzer generally keeps her on target by tugging on the reins attached to the harness, so she can focus-lock and still locate targets to shoot at.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Freyy is short and frail-looking, standing five feet tall, and weighing all of 105lbs sopping wet. Her deep red hair is tied back in three waist length braids, with chin-length bangs that just barely graze the outside edges of her amber eyes. Her skin is pale, though her arms are lightly-tanned. Her fingernails are chopped short by necessity, so they don’t catch on the textiles she works with. Her standard garb consists of sailcloth leggings under a chainmail skirt, with a cotton tunic and leather vest. Paired with this is a backpack that contains a full flight-harness that enables her dragon to carry her underslung. Despite this appearance, she has seemingly no trouble carrying Buzzer on her back, even at a sprint. (He helps a lot with his wings).
HISTORY: Freyy was born the daughter of a seamstress and a warrior. As such, she was expected to be raised as one of those two. She took to both quite well, and was quickly introduced to the small clutch of dragons born that year. The one that selected her (in a way) was the runt of the litter, a Sky-Richk. Their first meeting was filled with biting and scratching from both sides before the small Viking girl managed to pin the hatchling on it’s back, wings pinned across it’s chest. At the same time, the Sky-Richk had her ear in it’s mouth and it’s tail coiled around her ribcage. No other dragon even approached the pair.
Before meeting her dragon, Freyy spent most of her time learning under her mother, how to sew and knit. In the evenings, her father would teach her how to use his old crossbow, since she wasn't big enough to lift his sword. Both of her parents worked together to keep her from going and causing trouble in town, trading her between them when they had had enough. This helped her develop the combination of combat skills and craftswoman-ship she later uses.
Even as Freyy accepted the small dragon as her own, the dragon insisted that it wasn’t hers, and would try to prove it through biting, clawing, and even outright dive-bombing her with rocks. Still, she didn’t give up on it, both because her parents expected her to bond with a dragon, and because none of the other hatchlings would go near her. Eventually, it warmed up to her, replacing the rock it normally tried to throw at her with a bucket of water. It was at that point that she knew the dragon had accepted her, and she responded with a tackle that knocked the still small dragon out of the air.
The tiny dragon grew quickly under Freyy’s care, going everywhere with her, out of a strange desire to not touch the ground, soon topping twenty feet in length. The dragon’s habit of riding on Freyy’s back, curled around her satchel, quickly evolved into a way for the two-limbed dragon to carry her quickly, and in a position where she could aim much more efficiently with her crossbow. This developed into a system the two shared where they would switch roles between rider and mount in flight, which had the unfortunate side effect of Freyy's ankles and knees getting beat up to the point that the joints will occasionally fail her on landings, or even sometimes just walking around.
It was around Freyy's fifteenth birthday that her father allowed her to go up on the watchtower and stand guard with the actual guards. She enjoyed the tranquility up there, and how no-one seemed to care that she was jumping around, or that she was often hanging from her dragon's tail as he wrapped around the various support beams. This, plus a test that she managed to pass (barely, mainly because Buzzer helped), got her into the guard, and the other watchtower guards agreed that she would make a good watcher, which got her onto almost full-time Watchtower duty.
She eventually re-stitched the backpack to allow Buzzer to wear a harness that connected to the pack, leaving her arms and legs free for takeoff and landing. The two trained using this harness setup until both were skilled enough to make a landing at a full sprint. The harness is designed to be easily disconnected, allowing Freyy to move around freely without Buzzer's massive wingspan and weight bogging her down. Even when connected, he usually isn't resting his full weight on the harness, instead using his wings to provide a little bit of lift.
WEAPON OF CHOICE: Crossbow at range, Daggers at close range.
FIGHTING STYLE: Precision markswoman. She tends to go for crippling shots, aiming for the knees and elbows, rather than the chest or head, in an effort to isolate the problem without going over the chief's helmet.
DRAGON NAME: Buzzer
DRAGON TYPE: Sky-Richk
DRAGON APPEARANCE: An Amphithere with a 15ft wingspan and a 20ft tail (weighing ~150lbs), his back is covered in short spines, making excellent fixture points for his saddle harness. His clawed tail is usually wrapped loosely around Freyy’s waist and torso, or around the wooden struts of the watchtower. His red scales coat most of his body, though yellow feathers cover the leading edge of his wings and the back of his jawline. His eyes are a dark amber, almost brown. When he is riding on Freyy's back, his wings are folded over her shoulders and back like a leathery cape, tips touching the ground, while his tail wraps loosely around her waist and his head rests on top of hers. When the two are moving around in the parts of the village where he can stretch his wings out, he tends to stretch them out and flap lightly, effectively hovering just above her back, so she doesn't have to carry all of his weight. Standing around, he tends to coil around beams and structures, giving him a higher vantage point without burdening Freyy with his weight.
DRAGON HISTORY/ EXPLANATION OF FEAR OF THE GROUND: Buzzer was born the runt of the litter, with a meager 6" wingspan, and as such was picked on by the other dragons, both from his species, and others. His small size meant that he often found himself getting stepped on, or pinned to the dirt on accident by larger dragons. These 'Accidents' made him avoid the ground, going for higher up places, where he couldn't get ground into the dirt, even resting on other dragon's horns, just to keep himself away from where he would get squished. Even as he grew larger, he never grew out of his fear of being stepped on by the big dragons, though he manages to control it enough to be within a few inches of the dirt for a few moments. Actually touching the ground is painful to him in a psychosomatic manner (it doesn't cause actual pain, but he thinks it does), and in an emergency, or when distracted, he will occasionally touch dirt for a few moments at a time.
DRAGON PERSONALITY: Buzzer is a calm dragon, normally situated on Freyy’s back, where he can distract her from focus-lock for more important things, like eating and sleeping.
DRAGON TECHNIQUES: Dead-Drop attack (spinning nose-dive), Tail-whip (long tail has a weighted end that can be slammed into things like a morning-star.
OTHER DETAILS: The backpack Freyy wears is designed to distribute Buzzer's weight across her hips, rather than her shoulders, and has struts that shift some of the weight directly to her legs. Even with this, she can only manage a running landing for a half-dozen yards before he becomes too heavy to run with. The pack allows her to carry him at a normal walking pace without too much strain on her back, though her ankles and knees tend to take the brunt of the impact force.
