*Note to staff: I do have a plan to get her off the island plotted out with a fellow member already XD
NAME: Esme Kaas
AGE: 19
OCCUPATION: None yet (Will get a job as a weaver on Berk)
GENDER & SEXUALITY: Female, Hetero
LIKES:
-Weaving. She is quite skilled at working a loom, and is able to make lovely patterned fabrics and even tapestries (only small ones so far, given the limited room in their home).
-Swimming. Esme is a very strong swimmer, capable of staying under water for extended periods and diving to great depths.
-Singing. Lungs no doubt strengthened from all the diving, Esme has a strong voice with a good range. Singing was often her family's way of passing a winter's evening. She quite enjoys a good epic ballad.
-Animals. Considering she had no other children to play with growing up, the few animals he family kept on the island with them held a special place in Esme's heart. Luckily they were of more use to them for milk and wool than they were for meat, thanks to the surrounding sea providing all the fish they could ever need, so she never had to suffer through seeing one butchered.
DISLIKES:
-The idea of eating any meat but fish (see above)
-Collecting dung chips. A necessary, but unpleasant task as they served as fuel for the fire on an island where wood is too precious too burn.
-Eel. Esme dislikes striped eels nearly as much as dragons do. During the spawning season around their island, is the only thing they are able to catch, which means a solid month or two of eating nothing but eel, followed by another month after that of rotting, spawned out eel stinking up the beaches of their home.
-Getting sick. Esme rarely falls ill, but when she does, she is positively miserable.
STRENGTHS: Kindhearted, good with an axe, easy to please, forward thinking, survivalist
WEAKNESSES: awkward in large groups (large being three or more), has trouble saying 'no', easily confused by some social norms, naive
FEARS:
-Being left all alone
-Dying without ever escaping the island and seeing the world
-Lightning
-Spiders
AMBITIONS:
-Get off her island home and travel
-See a dragon up close
-Get a dragon of her own (once she's on Berk and has been introduced to the idea)
-Get married and have a loving relationship like her parents
SECRETS:
-Daughter of an Exile who was guilty of killing a man.
-Terrified of lightning storms.
OVERALL PERSONALITY:
Esme is a very level headed person, someone you can rely on to keep her head in the midst of panic; who is already planning ahead as to how to clean up the mess that's been made and how to help those affected. With a firm hand she'll direct people to what's needed, and give instructions, though often times she'll be embarrassed after-the-fact for ordering others around.
Possession of a level head and calm demeanor doesn't get the the way of Esme's heart. She is a very kind young woman who has a great deal of empathy for those around her, despite her reclusive lifestyle growing up. She works very hard at any task she undertakes, but she's always willing to lend a hand to someone else if they're having trouble, even if she's dead tired at the end of the day. Being s new to society, she has a very hard time saying no to people who ask for her help, and it will take a lot of practice on her part to learn when to say 'no'.
Unused to being around large groups of people, Esme can be very shy and easily overwhelmed, but her natural curiosity will often help her rally. New life experiences will pull her out of her shell as time goes on. She will slowly bloom into a dignified young woman, who can carry herself with grace around others, direct them to the tasks at hand without seeming rude or imposing, and take control of an out of hand situation. She'll get there, with time and help from her new friends.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:
By the time Esme reached age 19, she was finally done growing. She is six feet tall, and grew into the long, gangly limbs she was cursed with as a youth, as well as the large facial features that made her something of an ugly duckling as a girl. Her arched, delicately pointed nose, once too big for her face, now gives her a more regal appearance, and she has learned to tame her once impossible to comb hair. It falls in thick, ebony waves to her mid-back, and when she's not working, it is allowed to flow freely around her shoulders.
Having inherited her mother's looks, Esme has eyes so dark a shade of brown that they appear black, the pupil nearly indeterminable from the iris, and very fair skin that never tans, but burns if she's not careful. She has long eyelashes that frame almond shaped eyes, straight, dark eyebrows, and full lips. Her hands, though large, are finely boned and extremely dexterous; very steady when it comes to delicate or intricate work. She is well-endowed in the curves department, but also sports a certain amount of muscle thanks to the labor she shares with her father in their fields to keep food on the table.
HISTORY:
Esme was born and raised on a small island some miles south of Berk, and it is the only place she knows as she has never left. Growing up, her family only ever had one small fishing craft capable of fishing the shallower waters around their island home, but unable to manage the deeper waters further out without capsizing. There are not enough large trees on the island to allow them to build a bigger ship, and it wasn't until Esme was in her teens that she came to understand why her family lived on this seemingly forsaken island.
When he was younger and newly wedded, Esme's father, Hjoldan, was exiled from Berk when he was found guilty of killing another man. She does not know the circumstances of the argument the two men had that led to what one could only describe as a crime of passion, and her father refuses to tell her. For his crime, Hjoldan was exiled to a tiny island that would support a small livelihood, but was left with no larger craft that would allow him to escape, or the resources to build one. His wife, Yara, stood by him and even accompanied him into exile, not realizing at the time that she was already pregnant. Eight months after settling on the island, Yara gave birth to Esme, who was to be their only child.
Despite the solitude, Esme had a happy enough childhood, as she knew no better and was told little of the outside world. Yara saw to educating her daughter in the basics of reading, writing, and math, but taught her next to nothing of the world beyond their island. Both parents often wondered if this was the best choice, but simply couldn't bring themselves to tell their only child of a world she could never visit and know first hand.
So Esme grew up on tales of the old gods and their adventures, rather than knowing the deeds of men. She knew only a little of dragons, as she could see them from a distance from the highest point of the island, so it was impossible to keep the existence of such creatures from her. Her parents have never taught her of dragon riding, though, as they did not want to get her hopes up of such an idea of escape. They themselves had hoped for it when they first arrived, only to be disappointed as the years passed. Unfortunately, Berk's chief chose their island well, as it was situated in the middle of the prime breeding waters for the striped eel that dragons hated so fervently, so they avoided the entire area like the plague. Though Hjoldan and Yara were not told at the time of their arrival, they had been exiled to the aptly named 'Eel Island'.
With no one to play with as a child, Esme started learning how to maintain a survivalist lifestyle from a very young age. This meant that she learned the ins-and-outs of building a life from the ground up in a place where there was no trade to acquire goods. This meant that her family was forced to make everything they needed, from clothes, to furniture, to the very nets they fished with. As part of their banishment, Hjoldan and Yara were given the basics they'd need to survive, if they were smart: seeds to plant crops, a few sheep and cows, a supply of raw metal, and several other things to get them started. Esme's parents made sure that she knew every one of the skills she would inevitably need when they passed away so she could life a life without physical want, however much she might suffer the lack companionship.
Esme's terrible fear of lightning originates from the tender age of eight, when her father took her out fishing in their small craft off the shore of their island. A storm rose quickly, and they were barely able to hoist the sails and throw down the anchor in time to keep themselves from getting dragged out to sea, where their little craft would have inevitably been destroyed. Though they could not be dragged further out, they were also unable to make their way back to land for the entirety of the storm. Hjoldan protected Esme as best she could during that long, harrowing night, but it is forever scarred into her mind. Lightning struck their mast several times as the storm raged overhead, making their hair stand on end and deafening them with it's passing. Terrified, Esme prayed to Thor to spare them his wrath, promising over and over again that she'd be a very good girl for the rest of her life so long as he didn't strike her or her father that night. Eventually the storm passed, and the pair were able to make it back in safe, though perhaps not completely sound.
Not long after she turned fifteen, Esme's mother died tragically one morning when she and her daughter were scouring the beaches of their island home for washed up seaweed. Though they didn't realize it, the cliffs above them were weakened in the wake of a three day storm that had only finally relented late the night before. Desperate for some fresh air after three days spent indoors, the pair had ventured down to the water just in time for the cliff face to give way and bury Yara, killing her instantly. Esme, left with only a few scratches and a twisted ankle, dug desperately for her mother and screamed until her father came running. Unfortunately, it was too late.
In the years since, Esme took on all the duties around the island that her mother once performed while her father saw to the animals and the fields. Yara's death served as a catalyst for Esme's young, formerly sheltered mind, and for the first time she thought to ask her father just what they were doing on the island. How had they come to be there, so very alone? Where was their extended family? Her father's parents, and her mother's too? Wouldn't they want to know that their daughter was dead? After so many years, Hjoldan finally found himself explaining to his only child that they were there because of a crime he had committed. That, yes, they had family in a place called Berk, presuming they were still living, and that, yes, there was a place where many people lived together, and that this was normal.
It was like a fire had been lit in Esme's mind when she learned this, though she could pry no more than the very basics from her reluctant father. Ever since then, she has dreamed of leaving their little island behind and traveling to where there were more people than she could count on one hand, all in one place. A place she could meet a new person every day of the year and still have so many people around her that she didn't know.
The idea terrifies but enthralls her.
WEAPON OF CHOICE: Sword and throwing axes. The sword, which she was taught by her father, is very simple, but sturdy in design, a traditional straight sword. The axes are similar in their simplicity, but she was taught how to throw them with remarkable accuracy by her mother.
FIGHTING STYLE: Esme has never seriously fought someone, though she has trained a good deal with both her parents as a way to keep fit and break up the monotony. Her height and length of arm gives her an advantage in a sword fight, though she would hesitate to strike a killing blow in all but the most dire of situations. Similarly, with her throwing axes she has practiced a great deal (on inanimate objects only), but she would definitely hesitate to actually use them on a living thing.
