He shifted in his bed as an odd light shone through the cracks in his window shutters. In a daze, he sat up just to be taken aback by surprise as a soldier of Heirah burst in through his bedroom door. He looked at the man's ragged appearance and instantly assumed the worst. The cult had been sighted periodically during the past few weeks, and the guard had been upped on the walls for safety measures. Not much could be said about the cult itself, they'd been a new sighting within the past few years, they were bandits at first. Attacking trade caravans and soldiers on patrol. They were a nuisance and nothing more. That was until recently. The cult had somehow acquired dragons and used them to raid isolated farms and villages. As a knight of the order, he'd been on patrol often in the past few weeks and this night was the first night he'd had of good bed red he'd had. It was too early in the morning for the light that was coming through his shutters.
"Ser! We're under attack! Captain says he needs you downstairs with the other knights as soon as possible!"
As soon as he heard the news he realized that the light shining through his window was a fire in the building across the street. He shot to his arms cabinet and spent the better part of five minutes quickly donning his armor before he snagged his lance, longsword, and kite shield.
"Right, where's the Captain now? Is he alright?" Together they raced down the stairs, through the lobby and onto the streets.
Citizens were in a panic, Siege weapons were firing over the walls and crashing through homes and bouncing down the streets. This wasn't good, the only building in the kingdom that could withstand the kind of barrage they were facing was the castle itself. Almost on queue, a large flaming boulder crashed through the roof of a building in front of them causing debris to shower down on the people passing under it. As the boulder buried itself in the building opposite of the one it had just demolished, more fire caught. Things were a mess, He wondered how many had actually managed to get to safety.
"Ser! Are you alright? We have to keep moving. This way!" The soldier pointed down an adjacent street and started running. This is when the first dragon he had seen in the battle had shown itself. What looked like a ball of spikes and a tail came bursting from the ground, throwing the Soldier against the nearby wall when the thrashing tail spiked him in the sternum. Seeing blood Rilkar rushed to the man before noticing the large spine trapped in the man's gut. He looked the man in the eyes, who looked at him with total understanding of the situation, his face flushing white.
"I know...." The man coughed up blood and frowned. "Not how I was hoping to go Ser..."
"There has to be something I can do..." he reached towards the spine but the soldier swatted his hands away.
"Leave me, the captain was last seen at the west gate, Get there and do what you can."
Rilkar stood looking at the man's wound, slightly panicked at what he saw. He turned to see the outline of the western gates, boulders streaked over the walls and he could somewhat see the formations of men forming inside the gates. This was larger than he first assumed. In the air outside the gates he saw what he had first feared, a large number of dragons had taken to the skies and occasionally passed low enough to blast fire at some unseen target. He avoided the hole in the street and began running towards the gate. People scurried about between piles of rubble, fired burned brightly. Just like the sun through his window. He woke up.
