Bristle Speaker
Physical Description:
The breed has a hunched over figure, appearing with both feline grace with the walk of a gorilla. Standing around five and a half feet at the shoulder, and ranging from ten to fifteen long from nose to tail, this is a fairly large landborne dragon. Broader shoulders with muscular forelimbs, preferring to walk on their knuckles while sharp, long claws are tucked under the pads of their feet. Their heads are a thinner arrow shape, spines protruding from the nose and sweeping back. Their scales range from a granite grey, to mottled brown, to obsidian black.
The most obvious feature of this breed of dragon comes from the rows of spines coating it's body. While strong, they are hollow with a small rattle within. Patches coat their face, head crest, shoulders, spinal frill, back hips, tail frill and a small ball on the tail with two spines protruding from the bunch.
The second most obvious feature is the utter lack of wings. Completely flightless, these dragons are earthborne and powerful diggers with their foreclaws.
Typical Behaviour: Given that these dragons are born deep underground, very little is known about them given in social settings amongst themselves. Though the general consensus is that the breed speaks using the rattle spines all across their bodies. Though they are inquisitive and pleasant to deal with in a non-threatened state, the breed can be a whirlwind of claw and spike. Typically, they are not found on the surface, but have been seen on rare occasions as nocturnal explorers.
What has been witnessed of their kind is that they are almost a pack community. One alpha that doesn't exert it's will upon the others, but instead does so by the sounds that they make. Quite capable of making their own brand of music, the Bristle Speaker has been seen serenading its own kind into following it. Other males are not chased off, but instead fall in line to protect the alpha. Their families can range from four to five males with one alpha, and six to seven females with one alpha. There are usually about four to five young. Bristle Speakers mate for life.
Abilities: Capable diggers, able to burrow at a similar speed as a Whispering Death, but far more crafty. Large claws adorn the forelimbs and act as both a defense and means of travel in an underground environment.
Capable of sensing the movements of creatures above and below the ground. Their tremor-sense allows them to seek out and hunt down animals that burrow beneath the ground. On the surface world, this isn't as strong. Capable of feeling slight changes in the air, but to such a muted degree that it would be worthless if it weren't for the dragon's heightened sense of smell and hearing. By no means is this Tracker class levels, as they are usually not used to scents common to the surface. Their hearing is a small adaptation that comes from their ability to sense tremors.
Where other dragons breath fire, the Bristle Speaker is a strange creature, as their diet of mushrooms has caused their bodies to generate a hallucinogenic gas that weakens the will of their prey and predators alike. The gas has been known to cause the body to go limp and provide visions to the few unlucky vikings that have been effected.
Skilled trap layers, capable of waiting for several hours, just beneath the surface, or in caves for prey to wander by. Once within reach, they explode in a burst of motion, sending rock and dirt to disorient their prey before they go in for the kill.
Drawbacks: Being mostly underground dwellers has led them to being almost completely blind in the light. The sensitivity causes them to be strictly nocturnal hunters on the surface.
Their lack of wings makes it hard for them to escape predators that are capable of flight. The only method that they are able to use for escape is burrowing.
They have a complete lack of taste, a side effect from adapting to the eating of subterranean mushrooms.
Training Methods: One of the biggest thing that must be done is to meet one of these elusive dragons out in the open in a peaceful setting. Coaxing with meat is a promising option, though it is best to not be holding it, as the few that have been tamed in this method have wound up biting their trainer accidentally. Leaving the viking limp and seeing things. They seem to be creatures of habit, so multiple instances of this can endear the Bristle Speaker to the person who is offering food. Once they have established that it is safe to meet the viking wishing to train it, they will need fewer treats to goad it into the open.
They are not known to be ridden, but they have carried a viking or two on their backs. Though because of their spines being movable, it is ill advised, as a saddle can stifle their ability to communicate. Though they are capable of being trained, despite their supposed lack of intelligence.
Habitat: Normally underground dwellers that are rarely seen on the surface, their burrows have been spotted here and there on various islands. They are more commonly sighted at night, hunting rabbits in their burrows or deer who aren't being cautious. While not rare, they are uncommon, but one or two have been sighted in an area, suggesting that there are more around.
Diet: Omnivores with a leaning towards carnivores, Bristle Speakers supplement their diet of meat with mushrooms that grow in the caves beneath islands. Immune to the poisons of these mushrooms, they have taken to eating them with a relish whenever they happen upon them. Other things they eat aside from the occasional rabbit or deer are Whispering Death eggs. As the eggs are left in the ground where they live, this has caused them to come into conflict with the species.
