Maddening Mimic
Class: Mystery
Males
Comparison:
Physical Description: These dragons have a very extreme case of sexual dimorphism. What traits they do share is their body build.
On average Mimic's are the same height as Deadly Nadders. They are very skinny dragons, with narrow bodies and thin limbs. They have long narrow heads, with a single short horn on their nose. Their nose horn almost seems to bend and a angle, curving slightly upwards. They have large eyes that stick out on either sides giving them a wider range of vision.
They have short arms, ending in three small claws. They have small feathers at their elbow joints, matching in colour to those on their tails. Their arms aren't really long enough to serve a purpose, mostly used to hold large prey as they tear into it. Their legs however are longer, with more obvious muscles. They have narrow feet with three long claws on the front, and short curved spines up the back of them. Along with the long claws on their feet, they also have one long curved claw, towards the inside of the foot. This claw is likely their way of compensating for a lack of any sort of hunting prowess.
They have thin tails that are slightly longer than their bodies. Both sexes have long feathers along their tails, the colour and arrangement of them varies based on the sex of the dragon.
Mimics have long thin wings, allowing for quick bursts of speed. These wings are held high, and slightly towards their backs when not in use, and physically cannot fold against their body. Because of this their wings are very delicate.
The skin that on the males becomes the pouch, and on females is just a thin membrane is always shades of red. The brighter it is the healthier the Mimic.
Male: The male Mimic's are on the brighter side of the spectrum, usually with cool colours on their tops, blues purples and greens, with warmer colours on their underbellies and underside of their wings. Their feathers are usually pastel colours that reflect the tones of their scales forming intricate patterns.
The males tail feathers have three 'layers' so to speak. The first, and lowest layer on the tail consists on a sail like fan on the tip of their tails, much like that of a Night Fury but composed of feathers. It also includes two long, thin feathers than get wider towards the tips coming from the very base of the tail and hanging down. These longer feathers serve no purpose and are purely decorative, a Mimic can fly without them perfectly fine but will be distraught over his appearance. The next layer ends just before the fan, resembling a birds tail and functions in much the same manner. The top layer is the shortest, ending half way down the middle layer of feathers, but it also spreads out the widest.
Female: Unlike their male counterparts, the female Mimics are usually darker earthy tones. With blacks, dark browns and even the darker ranges of reds on their tops and their underbellies and bottom of their wings usually lighter browns and tans. Their feathers are the same dark shades as their scales, but also sport iridescent tips.
The females tail feathers also have layers, the same way the males do, but instead of three they only have two. The bottom most layer is the same, with the fan of feathers on either side of the tail tip, but however does lack the longer decorative feathers. And instead of having two layers of varying length they have one somewhere in between the two in lenght.
Typical Behaviour: Mimic's are very curious dragons, and will stick their heads into almost anything to find out what it is. If your belongings are suddenly dissapearing and reappearing later, smashed, it's likely the fault of a Mimic. Males will often steal things they think are pretty to decorate their nests.
A male Mimic is a very vain dragon, his appearance is of utmost importance to him. He will do everything he can to ensure he looks his best at all times.
Males spend most of their lives perfecting their nests, using magma created in their pouches they will carefully sculpt it to what they will deem perfection. Once this is complete, they will attempt to court any female that happens to wander by. This courtship involves a song, composed of anything they have heard through their life. The more of a mess the song is, the more impressive it seems. To accompany their song, they will also dance. A display of the underside of their wings, waved back and forth for good measure and their tail feathers spread out as far as they will go.
Females will either find this song and dance endearing and join the male in his nest as a sign of acceptance, or she will move along to the next nest. They would much rather just spend their lives wandering the forest, and will only settle for the very best display.
When threatened, a Mimic will flash it's wings in an attempt to make itself appear much larger and pull out any dragon noises it may have learned. They will often go as far as to attempt and behave like the dragon whom they are mimicing.
Around humans, they are skittish. While they will always try and investigate the second any contact is attempted they will likely bolt.
Abilities:
- Males have an inflatable neck pouch, used as both a mating display and a way to make themselves appear bigger. They can also fill this pouch with fire to make an eerie glow. The pouch itself is a thin wing like membrane that is slightly transparent. The females lack this pouch, and instead have a thin membrane from their jaw to their neck where the pouch would have been.
--- The males can take larger rocks into their pouches and hold them there. With their fire, they can melt the rocks into a thick magma which they can expel later. Since it's not formed in their gut like boulder class lava, it simply falls out of their mouths. This is used mostly for nest building, as it is not a reliable method of attack. (It kind of looks like they are vomiting)
- Both sexes of this dragon have an amazing ability to mimic any sound they hear. They use the sounds they learn to impress each other, and hopefully scare off would-be predators. From the banshee shriek of a Night Fury to the simple sound of an axe hitting a tree, they can mimic any sound.
- They are light, and quick on both their feet and in the air.
Drawbacks:
- They are rather scrawny dragons. Physical strength is not one of their strong points. They rely on scare tactics, in hopes that whatever is attacking them runs away before it sees them.
- When flying, due to how light they are a sudden change in wind can knock them off course. They have troubles adjusting the course in high-winds, and will often refuse to fly if there is a chance of wind.
- As far as smarts, they most certainly got the short end of the stick. They have been known to try and defend themselves from their own reflection in a pond.
- They are very easily distracted, and will change directions with out warning to chase after something that interests them.
Training Methods: You must become the more attractive dragon. As amusing as that sounds, it is true. If you want this dragon to pay any attention to you, you have to outdo it in a display of dazzling brilliance. Because of this, they are difficult to train. A good way to go about this is to pluck the dragon. Yes, that's right. One feather will do, if a male one of their decorative tail feathers is preferable as to not disrupt it's ability to fly. In much the same way pulling a hair out hurts at first, after that the dragon will forget you even did it and soon be entranced by the colours.
If and when you manage to blow the metaphorical pants off this dragon, it will give you it's undivided attention. After that, normal dragon training techniques work, and usually work quite quickly. They aren't the brightest dragon and tend to fall or the first person who scratches their chins.
While these dragons are similar in size to a Deadly Nadder, they are not good for riding. They are quite light and the added weight of a human on their back makes them prone to crashing. If you are to ride one, stick to open clear air and short trips.
The added weight of a rider does allow them better handling of windy conditions, but they would still rather not fly in it.
Habitat: These dragons enjoy living in dense vegetation, preferably forest floors near the coast. They enjoy living near things with bright colours such as flowering plants, and will often nest near them.
Male Mimics prefer to stick to themselves and will chase other Mimics away from their nesting sites, but are otherwise okay with creatures or dragons wandering through. While males usually stick to one location, the females tend to wander from place to place to find a suitable male to nest with.
Diet: Nothing strange about their diets, they eat fish same as most dragons. Sometimes they will swallow rocks in order to help with digestion, but this is usually after they have eaten something too large for them to handle.
