SECRETS:
While not a huge secret, Birger does try to keep the people who know about his fear of adult dragons to a minimum, as he is ashamed of his fear.
He talks to the baby dragons like they are actual vikings, and proceeds to have full on conversations with them. Birger only does this when he thinks no one is around though.
OVERALL PERSONALITY: Birger is a gentle guy, he hardly ever raises his voice and is not known for ever getting upset. He often treats other people around him like how he treats the baby dragons, gently but with a firm push in the right direction if needed. This viking has endless amounts of patience, and is probably one of the only vikings that will tolerate getting used as a teething toy for little dragons. He is warm and inviting to anyone who needs a place to escape from the outside or if they just need to vent out their problems, he is an excellent listener and offers rather sound advice if asked.
Though he is of course not without his problems. While very welcoming to others, he is actually very closed off about his personal life. Not many vikings know much about him, and he would never dream of talking to others about issues he may have as he does not wish to burden them with his problems. This makes it hard for him to ever really have any ‘true friends’. He also is known for being a pushover, his gentle and warm personality makes him easy to walk all over and take advantage of. Birger doesn't know when to say no.
Birger is terrified of adult dragons, which is why he hardly ever leaves the nursery. The sharper the teeth, the more terrified he is of them. Terrible terrors are probably the only adult dragon he isn't deathly frightened of. This isn’t because of a hate for the dragons, no, he loves dragons a ton, but he is always scared that he will make the wrong move and upset them leading to his untimely demise.
This viking wants to be great, he dreams of being a legendary dragon tamer, or perhaps someone who can bring out even more secrets of the dragons. Or maybe just something simpler like, ‘legendary hero Birger’, he would settle for that too. Though with his aversion to fights and with how terrified he is of dragons, this little fantasy will stay just that.
Overall, Birger is a gentle soul who goes out of his way to make others happy and comfortable. He is patient and fantastic with little ones of all kinds, though is very easy to walk over and take advantage of. He hopes one day he can get over his fear of dragons, but until then he is content enough to work with the dragonlings and go day by day as he has for many years now.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Birger is a fairly average viking, he is on the taller side though. He isn't as buff as many others due to his lack of perpetual axe swinging. He has an open, almost childlike face with reddish-brown hair and green eyes with a touch of yellow mixed in. While a bit pasty, he does have freckles peppering his face and body to show that, yes, he does get out and about more than people would think.

HISTORY:
Birger was born on a rainy day in the spring, he was the third and final child his parents had. His mother, Eerika the deft, was a tall woman, towering over most vikings. She tended to coddle Birger, as when he was born he was far smaller than his other two brothers. His father, Fiske the fisher, was more even with his time with the three children. Though he tended to be more with his older brothers, as the two were little attention seeking terrors.
Family life with the Coldborn’s was eventful to say the least. When Birger was old enough to walk, he was often whisked away by his brothers to go cause trouble. Even when young he was always a bit more mature than his brothers, and tended to be the one put in charge when his parents were away, to his oldest brother’s dismay. Though the grief was short lived as Birger was horrible with ground rules and the two older brothers took advantage of that to no end.
The middle brother, Hackett, and Birger were the closest, as the oldest quickly became too cool for the rest of the family, leaving Birger and Hackett to each other. The two idealized their oldest brother and wanted to be just like him. They often would try and follow him on his adventures, but he always lost them in the village or the outskirts of town.
Unfortunately, there was a day he didnt. Hackett and Birger had gotten better at hiding, and managed to follow their brother deep into the forests surrounding Berk. Briger wanted to turn back, frightened by the spooky woods, but Hackett refused to let his cowardly brother go home, not yet. They caught up to their brother who was with an agressive dragon, which they realized he had been trying to tame.
The dragon gave a shrill roar, which was enough to send Birger fleeing from the bushes to his oldest brother. This startled the already aggressive dragon and caused it to attack, Birger was effectively pushed out of the way just in time before fire erupted from the dragon. Hackett grabbed Birger and ran as fast as they could back home, but their brother was not as lucky. Their oldest brother was killed by the dragon’s flames.
Birger and Hackett blamed themselves for their brother’s death. Hackett fell into a deep depression, feeling like he should have known better than to follow him, and that he should have kept a better eye on Birger. But time went on and the grief slowly passed, Hackett grieved his brother and moved on, now with a wife and a child on the way, as well as a Deadly Nadder to call his own.
Birger on the other hand hasn't moved on from his brother’s death. Seeing how depressed his brother became after the oldest’s death, he forced a smile on his face and had seemed to gotten back to his normal self within a few days. No one said much on it, as they believed it was simply because Birger didn't have as much of an attachment to the oldest as Hackett did. Which was not the case, Birger still hasn't fully come to terms with his brother’s death, even thirteen years later. Unfortunately leaving him with a rather crippling fear of adult dragons. Birger fears all adult dragons equally, as he doesn't remember which dragon had killed his brother, nor does he want to remember.
When he became seventeen his parents urged him to leave the house and find something to excel at, as up until that point he hung around the house and helped with chores such as cooking, fishing and cleaning. He ended up running into the Nursery Head, Gyda, when a baby dragon got on the loose and was causing problems, Birger had managed to help Gyda catch the baby nadder. He wasn't afraid of it. It surprised Birder, but he realized that it was a baby, and as such they were pure and innocent, therefore could never kill someone. In his mind at least.
Gyda offered to have him assist her at the nursery with the baby dragons, and he eagerly agreed. Now he is a well known worker, and is excellent with the hatchlings. He lives at the Nursery with Gyda and a few other vikings. Aside from his family, Gyda is the only one who knows about his fear of dragons, and knows why he fears them so much. She has offered to try and rehabilitate him with them, but he refused any time she brought it up. Gyda leaves the subject lay now, much to Birger’s relief.
Birger currently continues to work in the nursery with the hatchlings and younger dragons, and rarely leaves unless to go fishing for some more food for the growing little ones.
FAMILY:
Fiske the fisher - Father: Relationship is well enough, though Birger sometimes feels as if his father still blames him for his brother’s death. Birger doesn't blame him.
Eerika the deft - Mother: Their relationship is rather good, she is the only person who Birger will ever really talk about his problems with, leaving them with a close bond. She is glad that Birger is doing something with dragons.
Hackett - Older Brother: Hackett and Birger are very close, Hackett comes and visits his brother at the Nursery often. Though he always leaves his Nadder back home, for his brother’s sake. The two never stop talking when together. Hackett is a huge gossip and keeps Birger up to date on the juicy stuff going on in Berk.
******** - Oldest Brother: Dead. Birger doesn't talk about his oldest brother, and refuses to mention him by name as he fears that it will bring his angry spirit back to haunt him for causing his death.
WEAPON OF CHOICE: Given a choice, Birger would be far more likely to use his feet and flee from any battle he may come across. However, if not given any other choice, he would probably find something in the area to throw at the attacker. He has generally pretty good aim, so a well placed rock if needed should be enough to distract them, thus allowing him to make his grand escape then.
FIGHTING STYLE: Flight before fight. When given no possible chance to escape and put in a situation where he must fight, Birger’s style is anything but graceful. Not having any experience fighting, he usually just flails around until he gets an opening to run. He is a far cry from a night in shining armor, that is certain.
