Name: Hysteria
Current Leader: Baldr Bjorg the Bonkers
Notable Leaders: Hrothgar Silfr the Hysterical, Norbert the Nutjob
Allies: It is on neutral terms with most other lands, having made some level of reconciliation with Berk, but it doesn’t currently have many active allies.
Stance on Dragons Once a proud island of dragon lovers similar to Berk, now there is not a Viking under the age of 25 that knows their ancestor’s relationship with dragons, let alone have anything but hate for the beasts themselves. Everyone over that age have come to either hate dragons for real or hide their true feelings lest they be found out and ostracised.
Location: A little distance south by sea to Berk are the twin isles of Hysteria and Villany. It takes 10 days by boat to reach Hysteria, a full day on dragon.
Size + Geography: Hysteria is much larger than Berk and indeed has multiple settlements on it, though they all still live under the rule of one chief, who lives in the central town based on the only bit of coastline which is hospitable enough for usage by boats of any kind. The island has no mountain, though it is built on a sort of plateau, and has a number of moors, forests and caves. Due to the cliffy nature of the entire coastline, the only ways on the island are either through the main town, by dragon or through one of the complex of caves which riddle plateau. This last method is extremely risky, as it is almost impossible to make your way through without knowing your way, as well as the fact that most of the remaining dragons which still live on Hysteria have taken refuge in these caverns.
Neighboring it, with only a strait called the ‘Wrath of Thor’ separating it from Hysteria, is Villany, the majoraty of which is covered in a forest and the western part of it also holds the larges mountain in the archipelago.
Native/Common Dragons: Faerie Whisps, Deadly Nadders, Monstrous Nightmares, Gronckles, Hideous Zippleback, Terrible Terror.
History:
Hysteria has had a long and complex history, mainly due to the tendency of insanity much of it’s population has. While the facts are to this day unclear about the true origins of the tribe (Hrothgar did a lot to muddy the stories told, see The Summer of Ice) what is clear is that for many centuries Hysteria was like Berk, in that they were proud dragon lovers. In fact they probably had more of a love and control over dragons than Berk has ever had, with many scholars now thinking that the first Viking who deciphered Dragonese came from there not Berk. That said the man in question couldn’t speak Norse so there are still questions about the validity of this claim.
But as stated at the start, the history of Hysteria is complicated. Many a leader was mad in some respect, and due to the island being large enough to support multiple villages, there often was in fighting and rival internal factions attempting to take leadership. Norbert the Nutjob, Baldr’s grandfather, was one of the rare leaders who actually unified the island on the whole. But that did not stop the in-fighting.
Norbert had two children, a daughter, Tyra Bjorg, and a son, Hrothgar Silfr. Tyra was older and overall a better leader, but spent long periods away from Hysteria adventuring while Hrothgar stayed on Hysteria trying to gain more power. Because of this, factions started to emerge as Norbert grew old, fighting over which heir should succeed the chief. During this period, the relationship between humans and dragons also became strained, for reasons still not fully clear to most of the inhabitants.
All this came to a head when a bit over two decades ago, during a national celebration, the Norbert’s Monsterous Nightmare killed him, sending everything into chaos. During it Tyra was also killed and Hrothgar was seriously injured. Hrothgar turned the chaos into anger and many dragons were killed that day by the Hysterians, and from that day the new Chief declared dragons as an enemy of their land.
Hrothgar the Hysterical ruled ruthlessly with an iron fist, crushing any who dared show any form of sympathy to dragons, and often had hunting parties sent out to the nearby villany which still held some fugitive dragons to try and route them out. He was a cold man who nearly all despised and feared, even his only daughter, Ashaere the Lunatic, who disappeared four years ago when she was 12. Many thought she had been kidnapped by a rogue militia still roaming the lands but even after they had been destroys, there was still no evidence that she was still on Hysteria.
Then last June (a statement I know I’ll need to be changed as we move our calendar forward) Hrothgar, who was on his deathbed and desperate for his daughter to be found so that she could marry a Viking he wanted to take over for him) proclaimed that she had been spotted on Berk and sent Baldr Bjorg, his nephew, with an army to try to find and collect her. This excursion was an apparent failure, and not long after they returned, Hrothgar died and Baldr the Bonkers became chief. In fact it wasn’t long after that that Baldr’s forces found the remains of Ashaere buried under a hut formerly owned by the rival militia, so his reign is now relatively secure.
[That is all that the Hysterian population knows about the last few years in regards to Ashaere and the line of succession. For what the truth is (which is known only by a couple In-Character so should not be taken into account unless you have been involved in the plot over the years) See The Insanity of Succession (will link once written)]
Baldr has been a less severe leader than his uncle, still maintaining the anti-dragon law, but no longer permitting aggressive action be taken against them, as he feels that going after dragons merely makes dragons want to retaliate.
Current Status: Strong.
Traditions and Pastimes:
It is known for holding Vikings of a much harsher type than on berk, as they have spent much of the last couple of decades hunting and killing dragons leaving none of Hysteria and only a dwindling number on Villany, though this was not the case before the reign of the previous chief, Hrothgar.
They do hold most of the same traditions and past times as other Vikings, though their Snoggletog has been modified so it has no connection to dragons. Due do being south of berk, their summers are warmer and they do have a tradition of holding midsummer festivals around the summer solstice, to celebrate the w
