Species name: Bearded Buzzflare
Class: Stoker
Images (if any):
Physical Description: They have a serpentine, ferret-like body usually anywhere from 30-40ft and lined with black quills resembling reedmace or cattails that also grow from the jawline and wingtips, varying in size. They have a hooked beak with a nasal horn and long whiskers that are their namesake. A buzzflare's short legs are apposable and long-clawed for better grip climbing and scaling.
They could be an assortment of colors usually involving a highly saturated primary color(red and green being the most common) that fades to a burnt black and speckled with a secondary color that also coats the belly and lower jaw.
Typical Behaviour: Generally, buzzflares keep to families that pile and wriggle around eachother for warmth, though, their hunting patterns are typically solitary outings from whatever den the family resides. The den is almost always somewhere high-altitude to give them imediate access to open skys. They're patient and watchfull, much like a bird of prey, and they're movements are often swift and fluid, especially along virtical rock surfaces and treetops. Some of their mannerisms are slow and subtle like that of a snake, and some are quick, twitchy and bird-like. Neutrally or actively at attention, they are either regal and upright- keeping an alert posture-, or low, coiled and withdrawn when depressed, tired or relaxed.
Amongst their own kind, artfull and rhythmic movement- dance- is a rudamentary language and a common means of most personal exchanges, whether it be asserting dominance, mating, alerting of danger, or confirming peaceful intentions. The patterns their flares make in the air are what convay the message, so in a way, this language is technically a written one.
Abilities:
- Knob-like quills comprised of a core fiber and a thick growth of crystallized magnesium that become smelting-hot flares when ignited. This allows them to cut through various obstacles with a swipe of the tail- save for stone and metal which takes more time and effort.
- Evasiveness attributed to it's slender frame
- Up to 30sec bursts of short range magnesium fire breath per shot
-Can ignite itself and send lit decoy flares in other directions for visual interference, improving it's evasiveness and sometimes allowing escape from enemies amidst the confusion
Shot Limit: 6
Drawbacks:
- Because of their short legs, this type of dragon was meant for high altitude combat and is vulnerable when pinned to the ground. Wide clearings are sketchy in certain circumstances because of this.
- Their quills are sometimes a hazard if accidentally ignited and aren't extingished.
- Its a biological process to metabolize the magnesium in their diet, meaning it takes food and a nights rest to re-grow spent quills.
- Bodymass is rope-like and not much use in situations needing bodyslams or powerful impacts.
- Very prideful and easily embarrassed.
Blind spot: Its slighly bulbus nose creates a blindspot coning from the nose and below. But forward, up and overhead are key targeting zones, and wide ranges on eather side are areas where motion and color help them key in on nearly 250 degrees of their surroundings.
Training Methods: One training method that builds respect uses the emulation approach of mimicking the dragon's fire. Their magnesium flare quills, when molted, can sometimes still be lit and held at the quill root. Creating visually stimulating weaving patterns in the air with the bright white glare of their quills can entrance them if done well.
Habitat: Buzzflares are typically found in the green narrow hills and cliffy coastal regions of the orient, feeding on cranes and gulls and whatever is unfortunate and ignorant enough to fly in their skys. They tunnel their homes into the rock by melting it with their explosive magnesium breath and quills.
Though they are native to asian regions of the world, they still have means of occasionally ending up in European and Scandanavian terretories.
Diet: They are practically bio-mechanically designed to strike other flying creatures in the air, so they've grown to gain most of their nutrition from fowl. Gulls, hawks, geese, cranes ect... Fish is also an option but too much and too regularly over long periods of time could risk mercury poisoning and make them lethargic and lower max shot limit until properly fed.
