Species name: Marsh Tiger
Image:
Class: Tidal
Physical Description: Marsh Tigers are long barbed dragons with powerful wings and strong front legs used for digging around in soft mud and dirt. Their bodies are usually browns and reds streaked with stripes of black to break up their outline when they lie on the riverbed. Their long necks end in slender snapping heads with large nostrils that they can raise above the water letting them stay put beneath the surface for however long they want. Having no back legs Marsh Tigers tend to move by crawling and slithering but don't like to move on rough ground, they'd much prefer to slither through soft dirt or launch themselves into the air and fly. Their front legs have large shovel like claws for digging or for leaping from the water and grasping prey to drag back.
Shot Limit: Marsh Tigers breath a thick curling fog of explosive gases. This heavy ethanol vapour is thick enough to make a deep white mist before being sparked and exploding into a carpet of flames. Marsh Tigers can ignite this themselves, whiplashing their tail causes the spines at its end to strike together and spark. Inhaling Marsh Tiger gas causes light headedness and drunken confusion. They usually have six shots but drinking large quantities of fresh water can restore them.
Typical Behaviour: Marsh Tigers are cunning and a little cheeky at times, kinda like crocodiles in their lax predatory manner. They're patient and don't like to be rushed and they hate disturbances when they're sleeping or lying in wait. Competitive in nature Marsh Tigers are quick to analyse other dragons and weigh up their skills and vulnerabilities especially if it lets them take an edge in contests.
Abilities: Marsh Tigers are very capable swimmers and while they prefer fresh water are just as fast in the ocean. A Marsh Tiger has a long reach capable of lashing its tail or jaws out or pouncing with its front legs. Having a natural sense for water born illnesses a Marsh Tiger can tell almost instantly if the water its in has any dangerous toxins or disease. Because of their homes they often clash with eels and while they can't eat them they know how to drive them off. Ambush predators Marsh Tigers are made to lunge into motion at full speed to catch prey before it can react.
Drawbacks: As a breed Marsh Tigers have addictive natures and so their hunger for drinking means they should be kept far away from alcohol, one barrel could make them dangerously addicted. Even a trained Marsh Tiger can't stand being interrupted or ordered about so a rider has to bond closely and work with them because these dragons can become quite spiteful if they feel wronged. Marsh Tigers need a large amount of water to be happy, sea water is no substitute for fresh since trying to replenish their shots with it makes them sick.
Training Methods: Marsh Tigers love to play in water and a viking prepared to frolic in the rivers with them can make them happy. They also have a fondness for stew so making them a large meal will always please them, meat they can drink is something for them to celebrate. Listening to a Marsh Tiger is important for them to respect their rider but don't let them become too convinced that they're in charge or they won't cooperate. Marsh Tigers love to prove themselves against other dragons or just by hunting or performing better than anyone else, losing this record makes them determined to outdo themselves next time.
Habitat: Marsh Tigers are fresh water dragons living in lakes and rivers large enough for them to submerge themselves in. When winter draws in these dragons are often the reason some main bodies of water don't freeze over. These dragons dislike hard rocks since they don't like dragging themselves over rough surfaces. Because of their need for space some Marsh Tigers prefer coves where fresh water pours into the sea giving them the best of both worlds.
Diet: Marsh Tigers live on fish and animals that come close to the water to drink such as deer. They are very fond of freshwater shellfish and can spend hours rooting in the riverbeds to find them. They have a large fluid appetite and drink plenty of water.
