Species name: Poison Darter
Image:
Class: Tracker
Physical Description: Poison Darters aren't the most attractive dragons with flat scrunched up faces dominated by their large cat like eyes, fanning ears and high placed nostrils. These powerful senses make these dragons excellent stalkers and their hide is usually camouflaging shades, Darters are one of the few dragons that change their colours with the season changing from bright spring greens to summer golds, autumn reds and then winter whites. Darters have squat compact bodies with wide wings and short predatory legs for sudden bursts of speed. Darters have large under bites and protruding teeth as well as gnarled horns along their heads.
Shot Limit: Poison Darters have poor fire, their breath does little more than blow smoke and licks of flame. Their threat is the venomous barbs they develop along the back of their jawline. When agitated they puff these up and the needles stand on end capable of being fired ahead of the dragon. The Darter has a salvo of twenty barbs but they take a day to grow back so Darters don't fire many at a time.
Typical Behaviour: Poison Darters are focused and very single minded when they see something they want, even capable of shutting out their surroundings and ignoring everything in their pursuit. They can be surprisingly sensitive about their dumpy appearance sometimes and become upset if they feel their appearance makes them seem inferior. Darters dislike being confronted with foul odours or sudden noises especially when they all come at once and overload their senses.
Abilities: A Darters barbs are very poisonous capable of knocking out a victim with a single needle and leaving a human asleep for an hour on average, against another dragon it could take from three to five needles for the same effect. A Darter can often scare off other dragons if it feels threatened by spreading its needles and shrieking, at least threatening enough to dissuade most breeds. Darters have superior sight, hearing and scent to most dragons giving them an edge when hunting, they aren't as heightened as dragons like Rumblehorns but the well rounded set makes them better short range predators than long distance trackers.
Drawbacks: A Darters senses are finely tuned and can be assailed by certain smells and sounds, they're especially vulnerable to the dragon hunters trick of making loud noises to throw them off. Its hard to believe with their strong senses but a Darter has no sense of taste, it can be easy for them to eat something that'll make them sick if they aren't cared for. Darters can't breath fire, at least not enough to provide anything more than heat and sparks.
Training Methods: One of a Darters biggest problems is a low sense of self esteem, making them happy can be all about making them feel wanted and important. Their solitary nature can be hard to break at first but when they feel like they belong in a team they warm up quickly and can even be a little pesky with their good natured insistence sometimes demanding to sleep alongside their rider.
Habitat: Poison Darters usually live in thick temperate forests and grasslands with abundant game and places to hide. They remain put through all seasons.
Diet: Darters usually eat large game like boar and deer or even yak.
