Everyone is the protagonist of their story. That sentence kind of encapsulates the most interesting trait of most game masterless rp systems like the play-by-post method of rp we use here. Sort of by the design of the method, every character played on this site is the protagonist of the story, at least when it’s that character’s turn. In certain ways that fact is cool, as it means things are not controlled by a single writer with other people responding to that.
But there are massive restraints that come with it. Characters who are designed not to be the protagonist at any point are very hard to maintain, making it almost redundant to go through the arduous process of applying for a character, only for it to get used a couple of times before being forgotten about. Similarly there are quite a few minor characters Red, I and others have made as side characters, people who hold important positions in the plot at certain points, but otherwise they gather dust.
So, due to the recent conversation in the suggestions about villains (and my own personal wants to play things other than my usual suspects), I have created a new feature for this site which I am calling One-shot characters. Have an idea of a dragon hunter who tries to kidnap another player’s dragon? Now you can play him to see how that would go. Want to see how Hysteria would fight off a Dragon attack? You can play the Monstrous Nightmare that leads the charge. What about that long lost relative of your character who you always wanted to turn up for a single plot-based thread? Now another member could play him for you rather than you writing a conversation with yourself.
As my examples are showing, this idea is a very plot driven concept. Unlike the characters who you make through the apping process to be your protagonist in a thread, this characters exist for the story they tell. As such, many of the limitations which we instill on normal characters will not be used here. You do not need to meet 25 posts to make a dragon for example, nor does your character have have long term viability, or even have a fully written out backstory or likes. The main requirement is that they have a reason to exist, a story to tell.
If you are interested in trying this feature, go to the Guidelines to One-shots to find the template for this and to read our guidelines. This is still in a beta-testing phase so don't be surprised if we change how things work massively once we start testing it out.
