Species Name: Sentinel
Class: Mystery
Physical Description: A Sentinel varies in color but is always the same in general build and shape. Their head is similar in shape to the of a Night Fury's but much heavier and much stronger. Their eyes will always be a solid white color with even the pupil being white and in shape they are large and round with the pupil, if you look close enough, being rectangular in shape rather than circular. The Sentinel has long pieces of hair-like bristles on the edge of it's jaw, 3 on each side, that grow longer as they go down. The shortest is 2 inches while the longest is 6. They also have large lynx like ears. It's often thought that the ears are actually a form of communication among them rather than for actually hearing. Their body is strong and build much like that of a large feline's but they have a resemblance to horses in the chest area as well as in their haunches. Their legs are long and strong, more bulky around their paws for striking power as well as running power. Large curved claws adorn their paws, four in the front and two on the back to dig in for sudden stops or quick turns. The tail of a Sentinel is long, usually just a bit longer than body length, and sports two large fins on the end which can fold in against the tail.
Despite their incredible strength, the body is sleek and streamlined for better flight and running, however their muscles are very dense and gives them a weight that is much higher than expected. Their wings are large and are shaped typical of what you would expect of a dragon. But unlike other dragons Sentinel's do not have scales or feathers. Instead they are covered in a stiff, hard, smooth bristles.
Though height, length, and weight varies from Sentinel to Sentinel, the average height is 6'2 from foot to head and in length the average is 15 feet. Both measurements are the average for both male and female. Weight for the average adult is about 1,700.
Typical Behavior: Quiet, emotionally distant, very reserved, and they usually prefer to have some solitude. Sentinel's are not the most social of dragons nor are they the most fun. If anything they prefer to just sit and observe their environment, calm and still enough to be mistaken for a statue. Like their name implies they are very protective over things they consider useful, territory, and even human settlements they have chosen to guard. Sentinel's are also very curious dragons, they just don't go poking around places. Instead they prefer to observe and learn from said observation. They are also known to be very determined and hardworking dragons. Once their mind is set on a goal, they will make sure they achieve it in time.
Abilities: The Sentinel is capable of shooting globs of sticky acid that is hard to wash off as well as quite venomous, but that is the least impressive thing about this dragon. Sentinel's are known for being incredibly strong dragons, capable of pulling and pushing things six times their own weight thanks to their dense muscles. This dragon is also an incredible runner, but unlike the Speed Stinger it isn't about their speed. They're amazing long distance runners, capable of running at top speed for up to four hours at a time without a break as well as flying for long distances before getting tired, thanks to their amazing circulatory system and diet of fruits that keeps their circulatory system in good condition. They are also known to be great jumpers, able to clear distances of 16 feet in a single bound thanks to their strong legs. Sentinels are also known to sweat to keep their bodies cool as well as raise the stiff bristles that covers their body to allow air to hit their skin.
Sentinel's also possess a set of strong and curved claws on each paw which they use both as a weapon and to anchor themselves into the ground to stand against strong winds in some of the places they live as well as to aid them in pushing or pulling objects. The claws are made even deadlier when combined with the grip strength of the Sentinel which can reach up to 900 pounds of force per square inch, the curve of their claws also making it hard to escape from their hold. The teeth of a Sentinel are typical of an Omnivore, however the 8 teeth in the back are raised higher to create a level and make it harder to escape their bite as well as more damaging ( for an image of what this looks like look up a picture of Eren's titan form from Attack On Titan and look at his teeth ). Their eyesight is something to behold, though not in the way you might be thinking. Sentinel's have large eyes and rectangular shaped pupils as opposed to round ones, giving them a range of sight of 320 to 340 degrees with about 120 being binocular vision. These pupils also give them better night vision when they dilate. However, this isn't the key detail of their eyes. Sentinel's have eyes with 12 different cones which means that they can perceive many more colors than humans can ( humans only have 3 cones ) and in turn this gives them the unique ability to see through many different types of camouflage and easily pick out foes or prey against the sky, water, or landscape.
One important trait of the Sentinel is its bristles. Sleek, stiff, smooth and hard it is made to keep close and tight to the body in order to reduce friction with the wind when running or flying. The sleekness of the tough bristles also makes the dragon hard to hold as it can slip out of a grip with ease, also thanks to the oil that covers the coat. The coat of the Sentinel is also weather resistant in order to help it survive in different climates. Water slides off its coat thanks to the oil it produces and the Sentinel as able to move it's bristles thanks to special muscles and the stiffness of the bristles. To cool off, the Sentinel sweats and moves it's bristles to "stand" in order to expose the skin underneath and to keep heat in it can close it's bristles tight to its body. The bristles can also be used to help with maneuverability in flight and to sense changes in the environment to detect predators. A special patch of bristles exists on the front legs of a Sentinel which, when flattened completely and tightly, takes on a mirror like quality which they use in the air to search for incoming predators. The bristles on its head, face, back, tail, and belly is incredibly sensitive and when flared up can be used much like the whiskers of a cat. Likewise, it can use the bristles on its face as a radar to focus sounds towards its ears to focus in on a certain noise. Now, the hearing of a Sentinel is nothing special in how far it can hear, but it is special in the fact that it can tell how high or low a sound has originated from due to the fact that one ear is positioned slightly higher than the other as well as what direction.
The skeleton of a Sentinel is designed to handle the strength of its muscles, so it is quite heavy despite its thin and sleek appearance. To counter its lack of speed in the air, the Sentinel has developed a very flexible spine which gives it amazing maneuverability and flexibility when combined with it's bristles. The skull and chest of the Sentinel are especially hard and dense, made for ramming into opponents and dealing tremendous damage upon impact. A Sentinel's tail is made of flexible bones and strong muscle which allow it to lift heavy items, constrict, as well as deal heavy blows, but the most important application it has is for balance and deft maneuvers both on land and in air. In air the tail is used as an aid for sharp turns since the Sentinel has no spine or flaps and is used to balance out weight in the body since the Sentinel's front is heavier than it's back due to it's heavy chest and skull. The fins on the tail can be collapsed or fold in against it, making it appear finless as well as makes it easier to run. Sentinel's also have a very fast reaction time and their brain processes movement rather quickly.
Sentinel's are also very adaptable to the environment they choose to live in. An example of this would be a Sentinel that lives in the mountains compared to a Sentinel that lives in the plains. The mountain Sentinel might have a better jump and maneuverability than the one from the plains, but the one from the plains might have a better running speed as well as better endurance than one from the mountains. Another example would be comparing one from the coast to one from the forest. The coastal one might have longer claws made for digging into the sand while the one from the forest might have keener eyesight and shorter but sharper claws. Not only that, but their coloration could differ depending on the region and environment they are from as well!
The intelligence of a Sentinel is also amazingly high, comparable to that of a human even. They are able to create traps as well as have the ability to observe, predict, and even plan out attacks. They also have been known to mimic actions they've seen and deemed useful and are quick learners.
Shot Limit: Depends on how many poisonous plants they have eaten, but the largest known has been 7.
Drawbacks: This dragon has no scales and therefore no armor, and so are especially weak to fire attacks and blunt attacks. Their amazing circulatory system can work against them as well as it makes it so poisons and venoms spread even quicker throughout their body. Cutting a Sentinel's tail short or cutting off one of the wings is devastating for them as it ruins their balance both on ground and in the air. If the entire tail or a large portion of it is cut off, they can no longer fly and it makes it extremely difficult for them to be on the ground as well. Broken bones are also something that can inhibit them. They need all their bones to be strong and in perfect condition in order to use their strength to its fullest. Their bristles especially is a vital thing to them and they can suffer if it is cut or clipped short. The shine on the mirror-like bristles on their front paws can give their location away when they scan for predators and foes. Sentinel's also require large sources of food after extensive runs or flights, not only to replenish energy but also to replenish any acid shots they may have wasted since they cannot regenerate it by themselves, which means that once they are out of acid shots they are completely out until they eat again.
Their sleek bristles and the oil they have makes it hard to saddle them as the saddle will usually slip or slide around and make it difficult for the rider to stay on. Sentinel's also do not do well with energetic trainers, people, or dragons and will become agitated very quickly. While it takes a lot to anger a Sentinel, once they are angered it is best to get away from them and leave them alone. They will snap at anyone, even their own trainer! Sentinel's also expect too much of their trainer too quickly, often getting huffy if their trainer doesn't know what they want or need despite the fact that the trainer is often clueless of these needs or wants because the Sentinel rarely communicates them.
While fast on the ground, these dragons are not so fast in the air. They are able to keep up with Nadders.
Blind Spot: Directly behind them, below them, or right above them. They are easier to sneak up on when flying than they are when on the ground.
Training Methods: Sentinel's found near dragon-friendly human settlements are much easier to train than wild ones or ones who have encountered non-friendly humans. In fact they get their name from their protective behavior towards the friendly human settlements, often standing just outside the village on guard during the night as well as watching over the villagers and lending aid during the day. However even these docile ones can be difficult to train. Sentinel's are not very social creatures and very rarely show emotion, making it hard to bond with them. Not only this but due to their intelligence they need a firm hand as they will always try to outsmart the trainer as they hate being ordered around. You have to show that you are the leader, but if you try to dominate a Sentinel you will get an aggressive and violent response. You must make it clear that you lead, but also know when to pull back and let a Sentinel be a Sentinel and create a balance between you two ( which often takes years with this very stubborn and emotionally distant dragon ). Though docile Sentinel's can be rather confusing creatures. They don't mind letting a person ride them or order them around....so long as they gain something from it such as food or drink. No, praise and affection doesn't work as a reward for them. It needs to be an item or a good otherwise they will get upset. Strangely though, the reward doesn't need to be immediate either. They have been known to help farmers with their crops, helping them plow as well as plant seeds as they know this will lead to a large food supply for the humans AND for them.
Wild Sentinels with no human interaction or terrible experiences with humans are almost impossible to train. They will constantly be on edge and will attack on sight or detection. Food offerings don't seem to work on them as they assume it's a trap. It can take months or years for a wild Sentinel to even BEGIN to trust its trainer, not only this but wild Sentinel's seem to have difficulty understanding the emotions of humans and other dragons which when combined with their lack of ability to display emotion makes it even more difficult to bond with them.
Habitat: Sentinel's are very adaptable creatures and as such can live in a variety of places. They have been found living in forests near warmer climates to the south as well as in caves in colder climates to the north. Some have even been found near volcanic areas or places near the coast. However, they are most commonly found in mountains or in large plains.
Diet: Different types of meats, fruits, vegetables, and even grains. Most commonly seen eating fish and sheep alongside cloudberries, rose hips, elderberries, wild celery, and carrots and parsnips. Strangely enough, tamed Sentinel's have been known to enjoy drinking milk and eating various types of jams and bread.
Sentinel's have also been known to eat poisonous plants, though these they do not digest. A mucus secretes in the mouth to cover their tongue and delicate cheeks and gums to keep from tasting or being harmed by the plant as they chew, they then swallow the mucus and plant mix which goes to a separate deep in the back of the throat rather than the stomach. From there a special bacteria is introduced into the slime and turns it into a strong acid that, thanks to the mucus, sticks to whatever it hits as it burns and eats away at whatever poor victim is hit.
