NAME: Nanna Brandsparr; a.k.a Nanna the Numb (other titles heard over the years: Iron Glove, Blessed, Invincible).
AGE: 27
OCCUPATION: Weapon Smith and general worker of metals
GENDER & SEXUALITY: Female, straight
LIKES:
1. The glow of hot metal.
2. How molten metal moves.
3. The light from the stars and moon.
4. Drinking some good ale.
5. Having a good yak pie along with the good ale.
6. You know what, just pies in general.
DISLIKES:
1. Broken limbs. It's very inconvenient being unable to move properly.
2. New people finding out she can't feel pain.
3. People poking and prodding her and asking if she can feel that (the answer is yes, it's only pain that she can't feel). It gets tiresome after being asked the same question over and over again.
4. Berk...
5. ...and the only thing she hates more than Berk is dragons.
6. Things being out of place, this applies to more than just limbs. Everything needs to be where it should be.
7. Food and drink getting on her, which happens quite often due to a gap on her upper lip (see physical description for more info).
8. Passing out, which happened more when she was younger because of how bad some of her injuries were. She found it very annoying that her body couldn't handle it.
9. Ruined pie, either being burnt, dropped, or going bad (who would DARE leave a pie until it goes bad, honestly?).
10. Pie thieves.
11. Terrible Terrors are the WORST dragon! They've stolen enough pies to make it to first place on her list of "Things That I Hate."
STRENGTHS:
1. For whatever reason, she's unable to feel physical pain. This has been thought to be a blessing from the Gods themselves. Proven to be useful whenever anything falls into what is normally unreachable (such as something falling into a fire) without aid of tools.
2. Working at the forge over the years, her ability to work with metal is second nature at this point. Also being able to get closer than normal to the hot metals means she can put in more details when it's called for.
3. She has a good sense of smell, it's better than most Vikings.
4. She has no reason to hold back in a fight.
5. She's very protective, so if you're considered a friend or family then prepare to be fiercely defended.
6. As of 5 years ago, she now has a high tolerance for alcohol.
7. She's a good listener.
WEAKNESSES:
1. Being unable to feel pain isn't actually all that great, since the body still isn't invincible. She learned this early on as a child when a serious injury nearly resulted in her death. Or at least that's what she was told, she doesn't remember the actual event.
2. She finds it hard to sleep if the smell of her surroundings change suddenly. Otherwise she sleeps normally like the rest.
3. She's terrible at cooking anything.
4. She can't run as fast or as far as she used to. Partly because she doesn't really run much anymore but also breathing in the forge smoke is starting to take it's toll.
5. Her fighting style leaves her open to more injuries. Not something she likes dealing with after the battle is over.
6. If she doesn't catch a serious wound quick enough, she'll find herself passing out. She's never happy about that when she realizes what happened.
7. Becomes seasick easily.
8. She'll go into withdrawal if she doesn't get her fix of ale. One of the things that happens is her hands will become shaky so she can't even work properly.
FEARS:
1. Going blind — not only would she be unable to work with the forge, but her eyesight is one of her main ways of making sure nothing about her body is out of place. That and a past trauma makes her fear being unable to see anything (see History section).
2. Going deaf — while not quite as feared as blindness, she uses her hearing is her secondary way of making sure her body is working properly. If a bone breaks, she wouldn't be able to hear it happening, or grinding.
3. Berk taking over Hysteria — not that it's even a possibility, but just in case the impossible happens, she fears what would happen to her family
4. Completely losing her sense of taste. How could she possibly enjoy her meals if it disappears all together?
5. Dark places...
6. ...especially if they're enclosed spaces.
7. Being trapped.
8. Being alone.
AMBITIONS:
1. Becoming well known for her skill at the forge.
2. Seeing Berk destroyed, along with their dragons. They're the reason her older brother and mother are dead after all.
3. Learning how to bake pies... and I guess cook other foods as well.
4. Creating a close range weapon that's really effective at slaying and/or maiming dragons. It's not going too well at the moment.
5. She'd like to have children, but it's difficult to find someone that likes her for who she is. She's not exactly a looker and the people that have shown interest only wanted her because "blessed by the Gods."
SECRETS:
1. She was born unable to feel pain. Well, most if not all of Hysteria knows so it's not much of a secret, but she doesn't exactly bring up the topic to people (just in case they haven't heard, you never know) since annoying questions are sure to follow.
2. Her sense of smell is much stronger than most vikings. This is probably because when she was younger, she would follow her nose to wherever the smell of baked goods were so basically she unintentionally trained herself to pick out smells easier.
3. She one time suspected that her father actually LIKES dragons, but that thought quickly subsided, and she feels guilty that the thought even crossed her mind. It's more likely he's just spending more time away from home because it's just not the same without his wife around. Besides, it's the dragon loving Berkians that are the reason she's dead. How could he possibly like the things that killed her?
OVERALL PERSONALITY:
Though she might look tough and scary on the outside, on the inside she's... well actually she's still tough and I guess she does become a bit scary to an extent if she doesn't get enough ale (or if she finds out you're from Berk).
When it comes to loved ones however, she's extremely (over)protective, so if someone messes with you and you're important to her, expect her to punch the offender in the face.
After losing both her mother and older brother, her days of being talkative have come near to a close. If any conversation is to happen, someone else has to initiate it. The exceptions being customers, if she's buying/trading anything, or she knows you well enough. On a good day (or after she's had her fix of ale) she'll try to make conversation like she used to.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:
At A Glance:
From head to foot, she's covered in scars. Her hands and arms being the worst looking of the lot. All of this makes her appear older than she actually is. She stands at 5' 5" with a heavier build on her upper body. Most often wears blackened clothing, though sometimes the mess is covered by a furred coat.
Body
Head and Face — Her dirty blond hair goes just below her shoulders and is often tied in a braid. Her forehead has many wrinkles, as do her eyes. Her nose is crooked, leaning more to the right. Many cuts cover her lips (knife wounds, because if there's no fork available she'll use her knife instead. One must wonder why she doesn't just make a fork to keep on her) and also there's a portion of her upper lip that's missing — it creates a small gap on the right side makes a bit of her teeth always visible.
Her eyes are pale grey in colour, and often bloodshot. Also the sclera is yellowing near the corners. Her eyebrows have less hair coverage than the average Viking, they probably got burned off too many times to grow back properly.
If one was observant (or looking into her mouth for some reason) they'd notice her tongue to be burned in places. This is from eating food that is very fresh from the oven/pot.
Shoulders and Torso — Very muscular shoulders, and of the scars covering them there's an obvious bite mark on the left that seems to belong to a small dragon. She's got some chub on her belly, but underneath that has some muscle as well. Her belly also has a pretty bad scar resulting from a sword incident back when she was learning how to use weapons (see History section).
Arms and Hands — From the elbows down it's all burn scars and blisters from working too close to the forge. As such, her hands are very rough and calloused. On closer inspection, she's missing the tip of her left pinky and the nail of her left ring finger. Besides the damages, her arms are muscular from working the metal all day.
Legs and Feet — Had you seen them in her youth you'd see the muscles of a runner. Now though there's not quite as much muscle, mostly because she no longer spends her time running away with stolen pies and more time standing at the forge.
Clothing
At the Forge/Base Outfit — this outfit is what you're most likely going to see her wearing. It consists of a thin tan linen tunic with the sleeves ripped off, two belts, black linen trousers and long leather boots. The first belt is about an inch and a half wide; the right side consists of multiple hoops for holding tools and a flask, the left side has two pouches — one for holding metal bits for her work, the other holds herbs and bandages for any injuries. The second belt is a bit over two inches wide and carries two long knives, and one short knife (used for eating). As a final touch, everything is covered in a layer of soot and ash.
Walking Outside — The same as her forge outfit with the addition of a tanned leather coat, trimmed with brown furs, and a chainmail skirt. Depending on the season she'll put on an additional coat, which is completely lined with a thick grey fur. If it's not too warm out, she'll don a hard leather helmet.
Ready for Battle! — Assuming she's close enough to her place, she'll be able to don herself in her battle gear (which just goes on top of everything else she's wearing). This consists of iron shoulder guards decorated with the Brandsparr Family Crest,* two leather straps (which can be attached to the thickest belt) which carry her two battle axes, studded hard leather chest and back plates that attach to the leather straps, and leather gloves which go up to half her forearm. Additionally there's an iron helmet with the family crest that will fit snuggly around the hard leather helmet. Both of these helmets have to be worn at the same time otherwise the iron helmet will be too loose for her head.
*Her family crest is the shape of a raindrop. In the middle of the drop is an image of an extinguished firepit (three logs coming to a point with two 's' shaped lines above them).
HISTORY:
Early Life
Nanna was born and raised in Hysteria by the Brandsparr family. Since her birth, her parents knew something was different about Nanna. For one thing, she didn't cry during her birth, which at first they just thought "By THOR! What a brave baby, not even screaming out of the womb!" It wasn't long before they noticed some other things as she learned how move around on her own. Numerous times she bumped herself on table legs and such, but still no tears despite the bruising. They still passed this off as her being super brave, making them really proud parents of their child because they were unfazed by what would make the other viking babies cry.
When Nanna was at the age of 3 was when her parents finally got the worst scare yet. Sure she got cuts and scrapes and bruises before, but she was considered a tough baby so that wasn't that worrying. No, what really scared them was one day when her parents looked away for just a few minutes and then came back to her with blood on her face, and her left hand. Her teeth had started to grow in and it turns out out she chewed her fingers to the point of bleeding, so naturally they rushed her over to the nearest healer.
The news about the child who chewed off their finger spread like wildfire throughout the village. Just as quickly someone pieced together that if this child never cried from pain and now chewed off their own finger, this could only mean one thing. This child had obviously been blessed by the Gods themselves! Why else would she appear to be unfazed by pain?
Growing Up
It's important to first mention that she doesn't remember much of what her father said about how Hysteria used to be regarding dragons. All she remembers about dragons from her childhood is that Terrible Terrors often stole her pies whenever there were attacks on the village. One of the times she was fighting to guard a pie, a Terrible Terror made off with a bit of her left pinky as well. This was only the start of her dislike of dragons.
Outside of the attacks however, Nanna quickly learned that the other vikings treated her differently, though she'd yet to realize it was because they thought she had been giving a blessing by the Gods. She used this to her advantage so she could get free pies whenever she wanted from the nearest baker. Her trips consisted of jumping down flights of stairs to get there first. Many times this has resulted in broken bones, much to the horror of whoever was watching her continue her way towards her destination. It wasn't long before other pies started to disappear from the windowsills of other houses though. It didn't take much detective work to figure out the culprit.
Soon after when her parents were alerted to her pie stealing, her older brother Hagen was assigned to make sure she stays out of trouble. As a result, her relationship with her sibling became increasingly strained. Hagen always treated her with disdain, since he had no desire to watch over what was now the favorite child of not just the family, but seemingly the whole village.
When she was 9 is when things began to escalate. With Hagen beginning his Viking training, he really didn't want to waste his precious time babysitting Nanna. So he got the bright idea to lock Nanna in a broom cupboard, he couldn't exactly beat her up effectively. He wasn't smart about the location though and sure enough Nanna was freed by their parents, and Hagen was punished for this. However, the damage had already been done, Nanna now actively avoided dark cramped spaces and insisted on staying near her parents (or other people she knew wouldn't lock her in an enclosed space).
When it came to her parents, she was much closer to her mom since her dad would often go out to sea to trade with other places. Even so, she'd always be excited whenever the ships came in to hear of her dad's adventures (and to see what goods he brought back).
During her time spent with her mom is when she became more familiar with the forge. At first she was only allowed to fetch tools among other things for her mom (when she wasn't watching), but by the age of 11 she was finally allowed to try her hand at working the metal. Her first creation was a small knife. Crudely made, but still able to be used as a bread cutter, or a tool to roast meat over a fire.
She wanted to try traveling with her father, but for her first trip she was sick the whole time. Needless to say, she never went on a ship after that. She could have her father-daughter bonding time when he returned from trading.
Becoming a Full-Fledged Viking
Once she was old enough to undergo training to become a strong Viking, she found the need to impress her peers. After one incident where she fainted minutes after after being stabbed in the gut ("Did you feel anything from that?" "Nope! Still doesn't hurt!"), the instructors did their best to keep the stabbing-and-other-very-lethal-shenanigans to a minimum, but of course they couldn't catch everything. Such as Nanna getting a club to the face.
As her lessons both with weapons and smithing increased, so was her irritation towards her peers. Being constantly asked to do numerous bodily maiming and death defying stunts became tiresome, since the outcome was always going to be the same anyways ("Why do you always wanna see the same thing?"), and then there was always the one who couldn't get it through their thick skull that poking her will in fact get her attention ("I can still feel that you know!"). Impressing them no longer seemed to be important to her. Besides, they always left her when her bones broke since their curiosity was now sated, leaving her to awkwardly make her way to the healer (yet again).
She became excited when her mother showed signs that her mother had a baby on the way, since she wouldn't just have Hagen (a.k.a. Mr. Grumpypants) to interact with at home. Her brother Boulder finally joined the family when she was 15. She found it hilarious that the reason for the name was that he was apparently the most difficult of the three siblings to be birthed. Nanna doesn't even remember what the planned names were, and quite frankly, neither did her mom since she was in so much pain.
Being an Adult
Her life shattered when she was 22. There was a sudden raid from Berk. Her mother put her in charge of making sure Boulder wasn't killed. Once Berk retreated she, her brother and the Hysterians cheered, but the celebrations didn't last for long once they all took a body count. Among those killed were Solvi and Hagen, the armor and weapons being the only thing that could identify the charred remains. It was from this moment that Nanna's dislike of dragons became outright hatred.
Trying to get past her mother's death was difficult, she started drinking more pints of ale throughout the day instead of just at meal times. The amount of weapons and metal wares being produced in Hysteria was suffering during this time. When her father returned from another of his trade trips he was greeted by a drunken Nanna, telling him the terrible news through her sobs. It was after this that her father spent less and less time at home. At the time Nanna hated him for abandoning the family but eventually understood why — he was mourning as well. She just wished he didn't spend less time on Hysteria as a result.
Now
Nanna lives alone with her brother Boulder. Now that he's getting close to the age where he'll be able to undergo some serious Viking training, he's been nagging her constantly about going in to learn early. She's having none of that though, since she doesn't want to lose anymore family. She fears something to happen to him and she's not around to help. Instead she has him assist her at the forge, her reasoning being that this was around the age when she started to learn the craft herself.
She rarely see's her father anymore, but is happy when he does return. It means that 1) he's still alive and 2) maybe he'll have some useful ores or tools she can use at the forge.
She's also been trying to create more effective dragon killing and maiming weapons. So far all she's managed is a close-up weapon meant to rip off the thick scales, but currently the design isn't strong enough to last more than two uses.
She can still be seen drinking ale throughout the day, but it doesn't seem to affect her that much now.
FAMILY:
Solvi Brandsparr (mother) - killed 5 years ago at age 42 [NPC]
Einar Brandsparr (father) - trader; has been coming home less often since Solvi's death, age 45 [NPC]
Hagen Brandsparr (older brother, 5 years older) - killed 5 years ago at age 27 [npc]
Boulder Brandsparr (younger brother) - assists around the forge; age 12 [Profile]
WEAPON OF CHOICE: Preferably she'll always be dual-wielding with axes. Of course this isn't a perfect world, so if Nanna finds herself without one or both axes, her daggers will suffice. Also she's not afraid to go hand-to-hand if she has to, the bonus of that being that she can try stealing her opponent's weapon.
FIGHTING STYLE: Her fighting style will vary slightly depending on the situation, but overall it can be described as reckless charging with wild swinging with whatever weapons she has equipped. This can come across as a lack of self preservation, which can come as a shock for those not accustomed to an opponent who just keeps going and seems to ignore what should be hurting. She'll still try to block her opponents blows, just don't expect them to prevent all contact with her body and/or armor.
If she's up against a dragon, her tactics stay mostly the same. The difference being that she'll also try keeping their mouth shut (if the size allows for it) before moving in to blind the beast. Monstrous Nightmares aren't too happy to find that setting themselves ablaze does nothing to loosen her grip.
If she has to go ranged, she'd rather not have to use a bow. She's much better at using throwing weapons, plus the resulting sound of hitting her target with a larger weapon is much more satisfying.
