NAME: Boulder Brandsparr; a.k.a Boulder the Blabbermouth
AGE: 12
OCCUPATION: Assisting his sister at the forge; Viking-in-Training
GENDER & SEXUALITY: Male, undiscovered.
LIKES:
1. Showing off
2. Cool weather (as in NOT frigid)
3. Wind
4. Night
5. Walking barefoot on grass while it’s covered in dew
6. Stargazing
7. Lying in dew covered grass
8. Maybe it’s from helping at the forge, but the shine from metal is just really alluring.
DISLIKES:
1. Dragons
2. Berk
3. Ale, bleh! How can Nanna even stand the stuff? How can ANYONE stand the stuff? Tastes disgusting!
4. His sister’s cooking, if you can even call it that.
5. People calling him a liar.
6. People calling him short (luckily this won’t be for too long)
7. Hot surroundings
8. Prolonged eye contact
9. Being stared at for too long. This is a more recent development so he’s yet to connect the dots that showing off to people usually involves being watched as well.
10. Sleeping — usually he gets nightmares and he often wakes up in a cold sweat.
11. Yelling — unfortunately, living with Vikings means there’s often plenty of this
12. Smoke — he has no idea why, but he feels very uncomfortable at the smell of it.
STRENGTHS:
1. He’s fairly muscular, which is great for lifting things.
2. While he might not look it, he’s surprisingly light on his feet. Trying to slip away from his sister enough times has made him learn how to move quieter.
3. He can pick up faint noises that most others wouldn’t notice.
4. He’s not afraid to speak his mind.
WEAKNESSES:
1. He never thinks before speaking. This often causes problems for him and possibly others around him…
2. …So he cannot keep a secret. At all. Even if telling that secret will result in the end of the world, that secret will still fly out of his mouth. So if you absolutely must vent out your deepest darkest secrets to someone, don’t let it be Boulder, otherwise everyone will know.
3. The moment he doubts himself even a tiny bit he’ll give up. If the situation calls for it, this means running away.
4. Recently he’s started to become really nervous if people are watching him. This will affect his ability to do things he would normally be either okay or good at doing.
5. Loud noises give him a headache that gradually gets worse the longer he’s exposed to the sound.
6. It’s difficult to focus sometimes.
FEARS:
1. Dragons — they took the life of his mother and brother after all.
2. Birds
3. Airborne insects
4. Large objects thrown overhead
5. People not liking him
6. Being humiliated.
7. A side effect of one of his hobbies has resulted in him not wanting to be watched.
8. Dead bodies, specifically ones that have been charred beyond recognition.
AMBITIONS:
1. Somehow please the Gods so that he can feel no pain, just like his sister (little does he know, that’s not how it works).
2. He wants to become the best dragon slayer in the whole wide world!
3. But first he has to get over his fear of dragons.
4. Prove to his sister that he can look after himself so she doesn’t have to worry all the time.
5. Grow taller (luckily for him it’s in his genes)
SECRETS (he still has some surprisingly):
1. He might have possibly stolen something one time. Okay, a few times… maybe. Nothing big, just stuff like bread, some fruits, maybe a bit of salted meat, someone’s shiny belt buckle, a pretty fancy looking dagger, some weird sharp star his dad brought back one time (only one, probably won’t be missed), a growing collection of dragon teeth he took from some mounted dragon heads around the village… okay, he actually might have a growing problem on his hands, or well, under the floorboards of his bed that is.
2. His most prized possessions are kept around his neck — one is a necklace with an iron medallion depicting the Brandsparr Family Crest,* the other is a small pouch hanging on some string. The contents of the pouch? A Deadly Nadder tooth that Hagen gifted to him, and the metal star thing that he nicked from his father’s boat.
*His family crest is the shape of a raindrop. In the middle of the drop is an image of an extinguished firepit (three logs coming to a point with two 's' shaped lines above them).
OVERALL PERSONALITY:
He’s usually friendly and eager to prove to everyone that he can do something cool, or knows something that everyone else doesn’t. He doesn’t deal with stress easily and will prefer to run off, mainly as a precaution so nobody sees him cry if he does, because Vikings don’t cry, and he would never cry. But just in the impossible event that he does he doesn’t want anyone to see.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:
At A Glance:
Boulder stands at 3’ 9” and has a stocky build. His short blond hair seems to have a mind of it’s own.
Body:
Head — No matter what he does, his hair will never stay put, so it always looks messy. His cheeks are chubby, giving him a rounded looking face. He has a wide bridged nose. He has a habit of having his mouth hang open, which leaves his buck-teeth fairly noticeable. His pale blue eyes often have a tired
look to them.
Torso — He’s fairly muscular from helping his sister around the forge, and from being forced to carry around a heavy shield.
Clothing
At the Forge/Base Clothing
Boulder’s outfit consists of a thin grey linen tunic, brown wool trousers, a leather belt and leather boots. If it’s not too warm he’ll throw on a black wool vest as well.
Out of the Forge
If he can manage to slip out without his sister catching him, he’ll just be adding a soft leather vest lined with grey furs along with a leather strap (slung over his left shoulder) holding any random sword he can grab from the forge. However, if he’s caught before he can leave, he’ll end up having to wear iron shoulder guards, hard leather chest and back armor, leather gloves, and a shield that’s very heavy to carry.
HISTORY:
Early Life
Boulder was born and raised in Hysteria by the Brandsparr family. When he was born, his head was a bit on the big size, but eventually it became proportional to the rest of him. This is why he ended up with his name actually, because unlike the other two siblings it felt as if it was a boulder being birthed instead of a Viking. As a baby, he was terrified of his sister’s appearance and would cry whenever he saw her face. Over time he stopped crying and instead opted to throw food at her. He remembers none of this.
Growing Up
When it comes to his early years, he spent lots of his time being a nuisance towards his older siblings. Since he wasn’t allowed being too close to the forge, this meant being watched over by either Hagen or Nanna while their mother worked at the forge (with whoever wasn’t currently babysitting). On less busy days at the forge, he’d get some mother-son bonding time.
Of course there were also the days when his father came home from trading with other places. While not particularly close with his father due to him not being home often, he loved looking though all the neat stuff that he brought back.
At age seven, the life he knew fell apart. There was a raid on the village and being too young to defend himself, he had his sister to protect him. After the battle he and his sister found what was left of their mother and older brother, only able to identify them by the family crest on the armor. He passed out almost immediately after. While he blocked out the details of the event, it wasn’t long before some changes happened — changes that went unnoticed by his also grieving sister.
He started taking things he wanted. Starting with small things, like food, but as he grew older he’d go for more valuable objects. It was something to do since his sister was emotionally unavailable most of the time. When not going around “collecting” things he would stay with his sister at the forge to help out.
Once he became 11 was the first time he was actually allowed to try making some things of his own. He wasn’t very good at it though, and also wasn’t as fond of the idea of working at a forge all day. So he would slip out and continue looking for stuff to add to his collection. Besides, the clang of metal against metal became grating on his senses. It was also around this time that he decided to take one of the strange things his father brought back from his travels. It was a strange metal star with sharp edges. Hey, it was shiny and was in a box with plenty more, one wouldn’t be missed.
Now
Getting closer to the age of 13, Boulder has been getting increasingly antsy over starting his official Viking training. He’s been slipping out of the forge more and more often simply because he can’t stand the heat and the constant headaches. He feels a bit bad about it, but at the same time, he wants to prove that he can look out for himself as well.
He still doesn’t remember all the details of the event from 5 years ago… for now.
FAMILY:
Solvi Brandsparr (mother) - killed 5 years ago at age 42 [NPC]
Einar Brandsparr (father) - trader; has been coming home less often since Solvi's death, age 45 [NPC]
Hagen Brandsparr (older brother, 22 years older) - killed 5 years ago at age 27 [NPC]
Nanna Brandsparr (older sister, 15 years older) – works at the forge; age 27 [Profile]
WEAPON OF CHOICE: He prefers swords. Much shinier looking overall than an axe, and you aren’t restricted to hack and slash. JAB IT WHERE IT HURTS!
FIGHTING STYLE: With how much he jabs, it’s a wonder why he hasn’t opted for a longer range weapon. Perhaps the thought just hasn’t occurred to him yet? Basically he’ll do his best to not get hit. To be honest, he’d be better off using some sort of polearm instead of a sword.
