Agent Smith and Mr. Atgeir (Kenna)

    "Wow. This place is really bustling by my standards." Ylva said stretching out her arms. "Three years in isolation from my kind is enough to make me appreciate it." She was wearing her coat despite the weather being a little warmer than the previous days she had stayed at Berk. The snow was mid calf deep. Ylva assumed it had snowed the night before while she was sleeping, but it didn't bother her too much, for she had a goal in mind. She was going to get an Atgeir to replace the one she traded away long ago.

    "What you think? New Weapon good yes?" Ylva asked the Deceiver who was following her, and she stopped suddenly to stretch her legs.

    "If that is what you want, I won't stop you. I am not fond of weapons, but I guess that's from my upbringing." Valdis Prodded Ylva with her nose to keep her moving along. Ylva stroked Valdis' head and laughed.

    "You never like weapons." She laughed before finding a stranger to ask where the blacksmith is located. "Excuse me sir, where is the blacksmith?" She inquired before getting a blunt straight forward answer. "Thank you. I appreciate it." She smiled at the man before continuing onward to the blacksmith. "What you think of place?" She laughed and continued to smile.

    "It's a pretty cool place. It seems safe enough to settle in. I've stalked around here once or twice, but I've never had to stay here for longer than a day." The dragon huffed a little with her proud triangular prism head standing out a little to many of the other dragons. "I do feel a little out of place. Just a little bit though. I haven't seen one of my kind yet. Perhaps our ways are just a little too strange for some people." The scales under her eyes shifted to a red color. "Just a little irritated is all."

    "Don't worry. You be accepted." Ylva giggled a little before catching sight of a turquoise nadder pushing snow up against doorways to block them up. Ylva dismissed it because she was in too good of a mood to be upset by anything. Today she was getting a new weapon, or at least requesting one. She reached the door of what she had hoped was the blacksmith and knocked on it. "I excited. This be fun."

    "If you say so. I am quite against the concept of fighting, but if it makes you feel safer. I am okay with it." Ylva stroked Valdis' side reassuringly and stood at the door waiting for a response.

It had been an early start for Kenna, while she still hadn’t yet moved back out to the forge proper yet, the blacksmith had started to need to work on new items as she’d underestimated the demand for certain items. As such, she had brought the fire inside up to furnace level temperature. Her dad had built the house such that it was ‘safe’ and doable, but Kenna avoided it whenever possible as it meant that the insides of the house were boiling.

Sven was in the bedroom, writing. Kenna would occasionally invite him in, but he refused, commenting she was only asking so he’d have to get topless. She was wearing the most summery clothes she had that she didn’t care about, though she was wearing her apron over it and her hair tied back which left the burns on her face fully exposed. Kenna was glad to be getting back to forging, she’d probably gone as long as she could with just tinkering with the items she’d already made, as shown by how all of her mess was now very neatly piled and all of her inventions looking better than ever and in plain view.

As she finished shaping a dagger Kenna heard a knocking on the front door. She looked up, “Sounds like you’re at the door,” Kenna called out to Sven, who poked his head into view and raised an eyebrow at her. She waved her hand in a ‘forget it’ manner, she did kind of miss the days when Sven would knock before entering. But if there’s a knocking, that probably means an outsider. She walked to the front room, grabbing her coat and flinging it on, though not bothering to do it up. And opened the door, wincing slightly as she felt the sudden cold hit her exposed, sweat covered skin.

Outside in the snow stood a woman, who looked suprisingly vikingy for a customer who knocks, with a strange dragon Kenna hadn't seen before by her side. She smiled at the stranger, “Hello there, come in, it must be cold outside.” She let her (or them if you think Valdis can fit through a door/should come in ) before closing the door. “How can i serve you?” She asked the guest, glad that the feeling of cold went almost instantly, “I was just finishing my previous job so I might be able to sort it out straight away depending on what it is.”

    The door opened, and there stood a woman who seemed to be pretty friendly, and pretty fit. The warm air radiated out of the house, and Ylva peered in around the woman to see a nice looking place. While the temperature wasn't as bad as the past few days, Ylva was still cold and was very accepting of the offer. " Hello! Oh, why thank you. That would be fantastic." She turned to Valdis with mild concern. "You be okay? You no fit, and must stay here."

    "Yes. I'll be fine here. You just go inside and get it all figured out, and, when you are ready, come get me. I'll just wait outside. It's quite pleasant out here. Just remember that if you get hurt, I won't forgive anyone." Valdis nudged Ylva, and  Ylva stepped forward.

    "If say so. Be back soon." Ylva looked at the woman and smiled. "I don't want to be too much of a bother, so I'll try to take as little of your time as possible." She stepped inside quite pleased with the social interaction. "My name is Ylva, and my friend outside is named Valdis. She is a little motherly, but she's very nice." She was feeling pretty good about how everything was going so far. "There is a long story that goes with this, but, making that pretty short, I used to have an Atgeir, and now I do not. And I heard that you were really good with metal working and that stuff. I never learned much if any of that, so here I am wondering if you could make me a new Atgeir. I don't own much or anything to my name, but I could probably share some stories or work something out if that is the path you want to take." She took a deep breath before smiling again. "Sorry if that was a lot. Still figuring everything out again."

Kenna couldn’t help but smirked when the dragon told her rider she wouldn’t forgive anyone who hurt the young woman. “Don’t worry,” Kenna said to the dragon, smiling kindly, “I’ll make sure nothing happens to her while she’s with me.” She listened as the young Viking explained herself and introduced herself, “Nice to meet you Ylva, you can call me Kenna. And don’t worry about taking up my time; I’d just finished a job when you turned up.”

The blacksmith listened as Ylva described what she wanted while she scanned the foreigner up and down trying to work out what she could about her. The girl was a Viking, but not from here. She noticed the indigo dye on her trousers, which were definitely an interesting fashion statement. The interesting thing though was how worn the clothes were, like Ylva had been wearing them for a long time now. Kenna perked up when she heard the request for an atgeir. Kenna waved her hand, “Don’t worry about it, we can work out payment later. When it comes to stuff like this I kind of prefer to make first and sort out appropriate payment after, cause it’s generally worth me making it even if you don’t buy it in the end.”

Kenna started to walk back into the other room, “Anyway, let’s work out what you want exactly, it’s been a while since I’ve made an Atgeir so I think I’ll need get a good idea in my head before I can start.” She took her jacket back off and threw it onto the nearby chair. It was nice to be in a place too hot for warm clothes. “So, where are you from and what brings you to Berk?” Kenna asked as she grabbed some paper and a piece of wood to place it on, walking past the prosthetics, traps and other contraptions that were lying on the floor. “Sorry to be nosey I’m just always curious where new people to the island are from.”

    "Nice to meet you Kenna!" Her smile continued and took in the comment on prices. "Alright. We'll work that out later then. I'm okay with that." She followed Kenna to another room before finding a spot to sit down. The place was filled with a whole lot of everything. "I take it you do a lot of tinkering? There are a lot of small contraptions and stuff lying around. A lot of it looks pretty neat." She was tempted to pick up and fiddle with a few things that caught her eye, but she turned instead to discuss the atgeir.

    "Ah. Yeah. The shaft should be something about six feet long and made of beech wood. A fairly large sized head should adorned to the top. I'm thinking 18 inches or so. Give or take one unit. Standard iron should be a good thing for that. Other than that. I'd like a small loop on the but of the weapon should I find any trophies that would look good with it. That should be it I think. I really appreciate this." She laughed a little bit before hearing the question about where she is from. She briefly frowned a little, but smiled again before answering. She was a little upset at first, but she was really excited to share part of her journey to someone who wanted to know. She cleared her throat a little before telling the summary.

    "I'm a run-away from Hysteria. It is a long story, but, in brief, I didn't like the place, and I didn't really fit in, so I stole a boat and floated away. Then I met my friend out front, and she flew me here. I am really glad to be in a place that is bustling like this though!" She smiled a rather big grin before stretching out a little, but she was careful not to bump anything in the process. "It really is a really long story that I am not quite sure you want to listen to, or at least not yet." She was usually pretty liberal about what she told about herself because she had no real secrets to hide, and she enjoyed talking to this person who seemed to be extremely friendly. She wasn't used to finding people who actually wanted to listen or talk to her, but it was a definitely nice change of pace.

“I like to ‘tinker’ yes,” Kenna said wryly as she sat down on the now unused anvil near the fire, “I always have a couple of pet projects going on while at any one time.”

“A couple?” Sven’s voice interjected from the other room, to which Kenna gave him a salute without turning away from Ylva. She knew he didn’t see it, but it’s the thought that counts. Kenna listened to the girl’s thoughts on what the weapon should be like, taking notes and started to make minor sketches as Ylva did so.

“Don’t worry, I’ll be able to add that,” Kenna commented about the addition of a trophy ring. Kenna’s hand instinctively moved to the burn scar on her face when Ylva mentioned Hysteria. They had now mostly healed, with the area that had been burned now just having the slightly shiny look so show what had happened to it, but she still did think of it whenever she thought of Hysteria. Well, that and Harold.

She continued to listen as Ylva described the basic overview of her travels. “So, you’re a Hysterian who has a dragon, can’t say I’ve ever met that before. Though that being said, I did get one to like dragons while he was here,” as she said this, Kenna untied her hair an moved it back into the position she preferred, semi-covering her scars. She wasn’t working right now so her hair being in the way wasn’t a problem and she did prefer it down. “And it’s fine,” Kenna said to the Hysterian, smiling reassuringly, “you don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to, but I’d be all ears if you are.”

    Ylva laughed a little. "Thanks. I was thinking I'd slowly add feathers. I thought about it the first time I had a weapon, but I traded it for these nice dyes, and it probably made a difference in future events." She smiled, but frowned again when she looked at her clothing and how worn out and trashed they were. "I sometimes forget that clothing wears. I must look awful in these worn clothes. It's been a long time." She frowned a little more, but smiled at the comment about dragons and hysteria. She noticed a burn scar on Kenna's face, but she didn't ask about it because she didn't want to be rude.

    "Yeah. If I didn't get stuck with Valdis' group, I probably would not be here, and I certainly would not be working with one." She chuckled a little. "Hysteria is not exactly a good place for someone like me. My mother really wanted me to marry quickly, but I really wanted to learn about the world and everything that is going on. I've always been the person who learns as much as she can, but I was not ready when I met Valdis. Their breath is unlike a lot of the other dragons I've met and seen. Theirs focuses more on the disorienting aspect of things with messing with emotions. One good whiff and you're crying or feeling excessively angry. It's weird. But crying for two days straight without a weapon means you can't fight them, so I instead learned about them. They have an interesting group structure. If you'd like, we can sit down and have Valdis explain it better later."

    She looked briefly embarrassed before continuing. "Sorry. I ramble often. After I left Hysteria, I was stranded on an island that was not visited very often or at all. It was large enough to seem like it would have been explored, but it might not have been important. That's where I met Valdis. I was forced into submission, but I eventually was accepted into their group as a worker, and I had a good time. I learned a lot about dragons and the way they all work. It was there I learned that dragons were not the same way that Hysteria makes them out to be. Sure, some of them are awful and I believe they should be dealt with accordingly, but most of them, and this island proves it, are pretty kind and loyal. Anyway, on that island, I was stranded for one year, if my seasons are correct, and I was living with the dragons for two years. Three years of isolation makes human contact exciting." She beamed. She was having so much fun just talking. She hoped she didn't come off too extroverted, but it was who she was.

    Her main concern was getting all the details correct and get enough information out to sate the curiosity. She too was curious however. "Would you mind if I stuck around and watched you work? I am interested in how all of this smithing business all works." She smiled yet again. This conversation was going extremely well by her standards.

“That’s a nice idea,” the blacksmith said in regards to the feathers. She smirked when Ylva realised how bad her clothes looked, “Don’t worry; you’d be surprised just how many newcomers to the village seem to live in one set of clothes.” She knew Sven was returning her salute in the other room. “I can make you some clothes if you want, though I don’t have any indigo dyes to augment them so nicely.” Kenna did find her fashion choices interesting, though Ylva could definitely do with a wardrobe upgrade.

Ylva started to talk more about her past. Kenna nodded when the Hysterian talked about her homeland, “Sounds about right compared to how Harold described it,” she muttered. Sven came into view when Valdis started to talk about her dragon and leaned on the doorframe, which Kenna was not surprised by in the least. The concept of a dragon who could affect people’s emotions was fascinating, if slightly scary. You don’t really need fire breath if you can mess with them psychologically. Kenna smiled when she offered to have a chat with Valdis, “I’m sure Sven would love to, right?”

Sven nodded, “Yeah, I don’t think I’ve ever met a dragon like that before.” Sven then mentioned to Ylva about how he was a dragonologist and, once he checked it was alright, left the room and went outside, putting his thick coat on as he did.

The young woman then talked about her time on the island. “Don’t worry about rambling,” Kenna said kindly, “I enjoy talking with people and it sounds like you should be around people a lot more to get used to it again. And of course I wouldn’t mind you watching as I work, I’d need to order the staff, but you’ll definitely be able to watch me make the blade and ring.” She then thought about what Ylva had described. While had a few mixed feeling about how the whole ‘friendship’ between her and Valdis happened, she did recognise dragon human relationships generally started from questionable initial dynamics.

“Three years stuck on an island with no one but dragons to talk to…in the same set of clothes, I’m not sure I still have clothes that are three years old.” She paused for a moment before bursting into laughter at how that had been what she’d brought out of that. “Okay, definitely making you new clothes,” she said, jumping off her anvil and walked over to where a long piece of rope was, “I’ll just add it to my decision on what you’ll need to do to pay me back.”

    Ylva smiled when Kenna told her that she could get her some new clothing. "Yeah. These are a mess." She saw a man whom Kenna called Sven walk in and agree with Kenna about talking to Valdis. "My dragonese is quite messy, so I'll try to add to the discussion when it happens, but I won't be able to do much. I only picked up on a thing here or there while living with the dragons."

    Sven left and Kenna had continued her explanation. Kenna made the comment about enjoying talking to people and letting Ylva watch her work, and Ylva smiled. "Yeah. I really should talk to a lot of people. I really enjoy being with people. One more year on that island and I might not be sane... or at least sane by my definitions. Thanks for letting me do that. I have a few things that bring me joy, and learning definitely tops that list." 

    Kenna brought up the clothing again. "I washed them the best I could here and there, but they're definitely not as nice as when I first made them." Kenna had started to laugh, and Ylva busted out too. Kenna told Ylva that new clothes were on the list of things to do. "Yeah. Just tack them on however I'm going to pay for all of this later. I didn't really think that far ahead, but I know we'll figure something out." She laughed a little before looking at Kenna. "Thanks for the warm welcome. I know there a lot of bad blood between Hysteria and here, though I never imagined this place to be such a sanctuary. I always figured like some people had a dragon and some people didn't. Like it was a pet thing. But I guess it really isn't. This place really is incredible. Anyway. Thanks for the warm welcome again. I didn't know if I'd fit in here or not, but it seems like there are people willing to tolerate all of this chatter."

Ylva commented about how she’d learned dragonese at a basic level when on the island, “Sven taught me dragonese when he first got to Berk as his way for paying for fixing his saddle. Before then I’d had fun making up my own language to talk to my terrible terror.” Kenna slightly missed that stupid language, but dragonese was a million time better for communication.

“Don’t worry,” Kenna said in regards to Ylva’s fears of going mad, “I doubt any insanity would make you seem out of place here, I know a couple of people who are definitely describable as ‘feral’,” Kenna of course thought of Ulrika as she said that. “And hey, maybe you could help me out with things, it’d probably be the best way for you to pay me back, given that you currently don’t have anything physical to trade.”

Once Kenna had picked a piece of rope, she placed down the writing items on her anvil and walked up to Ylva, “take off your jacket, I’ll take your measurements now so I can make you something that fits well.” Once the Hysterian had taken off her coat, Kenna started to wrap the piece of rope round the body parts which needed measuring.

Kenna blushed slightly when Ylva thanked her. “There’s really no need,” the blacksmith said, putting the rope round the girl’s neck before making the appropriate markings and going on to measuring shoulder width, “You’re a fellow dragon lover, I don’t think the history of your homeland reflects you as a person. And anyway, even with my own personal scars from hysteria, I’ve made friends with people from there.”

She thought of Harold again as she moved to the waist measurement. Kenna didn’t realise just how intimate she was being as she measured Ylva, to her it was how she always did it, but in reality she could have done it in ways that could have invaded the Hysterian’s personal space a bit less.

[Ylva and Valdis]

    Ylva chuckled at the response about the language for the terrible terror, but she fell silent for a few moments as she began to think a little when Kenna told her that any level of insanity would be accepted. She remembered how much insanity there was on Hysteria and how that was part of the reason she left. She finally broke her silence after a few minutes, "I suppose that where I come from, I expected to already be insane, and hey, I might just be." She laughed a little. "Help you out with some work? That sounds good. I could learn more about how everything works and certain processes. I'm willing to do that yeah."

    She grinned before receiving the order to take off her jacket. "Oh. Okay." She took it off and set it on top of Kenna's jacket. "I'm not really sure how that rope you are using works. Like. I understand it's to take a measurement, but is each mark like a unit of something or is each mark like a length that you need to make each piece?"

    Ylva smiled when she saw that Kenna blushed a little to her comment. Kenna mentioned something about scars and friends in response to her comment, but Ylva was spacing out a little before snapping back to reality when she thought of something. "Oh! I totally forgot. I'm still looking for a place to pass out in until I learn entirely how to build a long term shelter. Do you know a place?" She laughed a little nervously. She was just throwing a ton of things that needed to be done on Kenna, but she felt like if she just got it all cleaned up as soon as possible, she could rest and enjoy her time on Berk.

Kenna listened as Ylva talked about the madness of Hysteria, she thought about her experences with them, “I do remember my uncle talking about that, though Harold seemed relatively normal, albeit a bit in a shell.” She smiled when the girl showed enthusiasm for learning, Kenna had a feeling they would get on will.

Ylva asked about what Kenna was doing with the rope, “Well,” the blacksmith started, taking it off of Ylva’s hips and moving it back up to her chest, “basicly I wrap this rope around the area I need a measurement,” she said doing so around the widest part of the Hysterian’s bust. “Then, once I have it right, I mark it with a rune I associate with the measurement.” As she talked she etched in a Berkanan onto the rope with her writing implement, and then let go of that part of the rope so it hand down straight. Kenna then proceded to point at each rune or variant of a rune she’d put on this rope so far and explained what they meant. “Just need to do arm and leg measurements and I’m done.” She grinned and put the rope along the outer side of Ylva’s arm.

Kenna was just finishing when the Hysterian remembered she had nowhere to stay. She smirked, “You really have just droped in out of nowhere, haven’t you. Next you’ll be asking me to feed you,” she said jokingly. Kenna looked back at the storage room, “My old bed from back when mum and dad still had the main bedroom is still around, I guess I could live with you using it for a couple of days until you find something more long term.”

“But,” She stood up straight, their faces were close due to the fact she had just been measuring Ylva. Kenna gently placed her finger on the Hysterian’s nose, “if I let you stay I’m gonna be asking you to do a lot more work than I would have asked otherwise. You will be my guest, but you’ll need to pull your weight. How’s your cooking?” She asked half-jokingly, though it was serious. Once Ylva gave her reply, Kenna then commented, “well, we’d better move things so the bed is useable I guess.”

    Kenna mentioned how her uncle said that Hysteria was a pretty maddened place. "Was your uncle from Hysteria too? I mean. A lot of Hysterians seem to have a bit of crazy in them. My father was really bent on fighting things. Like. Everything that could move. My brother was really deep into siege machine creation. He'd never be home. Like ever. He'd stay up for hours and hours tinkering and creating systems. And my mother... yeah. She was hell bent on throwing me into marriage." Ylva explained. She laughed and scratched her head. "I mean. It's kind of understandable why I left." 

    "Oh. That makes sense. Yeah. I can see how that'd be efficient, though eventually a new rope would be needed due to all the markings and getting confused which ones are recent and what not. Okay. You do that." Kenna finished before remarking on her comment about a lack of a home. "Well. I literally did drop in out of nowhere thanks to Valdis, but here yeah. I've asked a few people already, but generally speaking this place seems to be pretty packed up. Well. I can't say that ever crossed my mind... yet." Ylva retorted equally jokingly. "Yeah. I won't be here forever. Until I can learn how to make a stable structure that is permanent, or get someone else to do it, just a roof and a bed would be outstanding." She laughed and, once again, scratched her head.

    Kenna put her finger on Ylva's nose, and Ylva blushed. "Yeah. I can do that. I get bored when I don't do anything, so whatever you need me to do, just tell me and it'll get done." She laughed. "My cooking? I... uh. Er. Uh. I uh... ate tree leaves for three years. I haven't cooked like... ever." She hesitated before continuing. "Yeah. Let's clean it up. It doesn't have to be perfection or even close. I'm just going to be sleeping in there, and I don't have anything in my possession to store, so it just has to be livable." She laughed before going with Kenna to her temporary place to stay.

Kenna laughed at Ylva’s misunderstanding, “No, Uncle Ari is very much Berkite, he’s the shaman of our village, but he’s been in correspondence with your shaman, Therapuks?” Kenna had a feeling she had butchered the name but she hadn’t heard the name enough to be able to remember it properly. She listened to Ylva’s description of her family, thinking of her own family as she did. Her mum had never pushed her into marriage or anything like that. Then again, her mum had buggered off with some sailor when she was ten, so she’d never had the time to do anything like that. Her Aunty Doomhammer had ended up taking that role really in the years and she’d never pushed her towards marriage or anything like that.

The blacksmith smiled at the girls comment about her rope, “yeah I guess it could get confusing, but the ropes are one per person and I can usually make effectively different variants on the symbols to be able to keep track of which measurements should be used.” She did nod at the girl’s comments about actually dropping out of nowhere, and stuck her tongue out at her when she joked about asking for food. “Looks like I’ll need to teach you that as well...or at least make sure you cover the costs.” Kenna took off her apron as they walked towards the storage room and hooked it on the wall. She didn’t like wearing the thing unless she was working, when it was kind of needed.

The two entered her storage room and surveyed it quickly, it was very cluttered, with shelving units by all of the wall that was already full and a large number of weapons and other inventions on the old bed that had once been hers, which was where she had put it all back when she’d brought everything in for the winter. “Okay,” Kenna started, walking over to her bed, “let’s just move all this to where to somewhere out the way,” she picked up a couple of weapons and dropped them over by the other side of the room. “if there’s no place for them just chuck them into the other room.”

(OOC: now’s the time for Ylva to find any random invention you can think of and the name Kenna was looking for was Theraputix)

    "Ah." Ylva laughed at the butchering of Theraputix's name. "You mean Theraputix?" She chuckled again. Theraputix was her favorite person in Hysteria, but she didn't regret leaving, and she definitely didn't regret coming for a new Atgeir. After all, she's figured out everything she needed to figure out already, which was a really good thing to have taken care of. Having a place to stay, some new clothes, and a new weapon were all things Ylva took great pleasure in having completed. The next objective was creating a stable web of connections, and adapting fully to the berkian life style.

    Kenna explained the ropes more, and Ylva make the connection. "Ah. That makes a lot more sense. You have a pretty good system here. It seems to work quite well, so I won't dabble in that business any further." Ylva was a little bummed that she might have to do even more work than she has already managed to rack up, but responded lightheartedly, "I'm not sure on how I can help with covering the costs, but I can try. You just tell me what I need to do, and I'll figure it out from there." She smiled and nodded. 

    They got into the back room, and Ylva immediately was struck by the clutter. Many inventions, weapons, and concepts were stored in the area. "Wow. This place has a lot of cool stuff." She smiled before Kenna told her to help move a few things around the room in order to create enough space to make the place habitable. "Yeah. I can do that." She started to move various inventions and weapons off the bed and started to create relatively neat spaces where certain types of things would go. "Ha. This place will be fun to sleep in. The scent kind of reminds me of when my brother was home. It's not exact, but it's close." She laughed a bit before picking up a peculiar device. "What. Is this?" It was an odd invention, or at least a scale model of one. It looked like the base of a catapult, but with a big harpoon strapped up to a crossbow type device on the top.
