VIKING BIO
NAME: Jokul Steinthor
AGE: 17
OCCUPATION: Viking-in-Training (Hopefully, nearing a teaching position)
• Besides learning with the other teens, he's ever-so-slowly becoming a Dragonese tutor. It wasn't planned, but he already has a few students
GENDER/SEXUALITY: Male, Straight
LIKES:
• Being Useful - It's why he takes daily trips around Berk to get what his parents might ask for
• Quiet - It's heaven for him when Starkad finally shuts up
• Order - If possible, he likes to have things planned beforehand
• The sun - Or warmth in general
DISLIKES:
• Snow/Mud - Or anything else that's hard to walk on (It all looks the same to him and makes it difficult to know when there's something that could trip him)
• Mead - He used drink at the big celebrations, like Snoggletog, but nowadays, he avoids it
• Talkers - This applies to both humans and dragons. Anyone who constantly talks will quickly get on his bad side
• ViT Lessons - He's never liked them. Ulrika's too loud, Grima teases him sometimes, Starkad manages to wander off to make a mess, Fern distracts him, and the cherry topping it all off; now he can't even see properly to learn with them correctly
• Preparing dinner - Of all the chores he has to do, getting food ready is his least favorite. Not only is he worried he might chop a finger off, but he has to listen to his mother's teasing remarks throughout the entire evening if he refuses
STRENGTHS:
• Language Fluency - He can speak in both Dragonese and Norse
• Loyal - Once he gains someone's trust, he'll do his best to keep it
• Perceptive - Physical aspects mostly. He's limited by his eyesight, but what he does see he doesn't take lightly
---Ex. If someone's limping; movement from the corner of his eyes; etc.
• Moral - While his beliefs of right and wrong are strong, it doesn't always mean he acts accordingly
WEAKNESSES:
• Astigmatism - He's got bad eyesight due to injury. He just can't see detail in things
---Meaning he can't read/write very well anymore (Something he's self conscious about whenever he manages to spot norse symbols)
• First Impressions - He tends to come off as bad-tempered or indifferent, even if it isn't necessarily his intention.
• Socially Inept - He's not the best at talking to people without sounding like he just woke up on a Monday
• Insecurity - What little self-confidence he had pretty much vanished after the accident
FEARS:
• Heights - Good thing his dragon can't fly
• The ocean - Not for his sake, but Starkad's. Ironic that he's the one who's scared of the ocean when she's the one who can't swim
• Change - Some of it for obvious reasons, but he doesn't adapt well. Having been forced into a blurry world, he doesn't think he can handle anything else new
• Being the center of attention - It never ends well when he's aware of how many people are watching him
• Zipplebacks - Despite telling himself that the one who attacked him wasn't in it's right mind, he can't shake the initial spike of adrenaline whenever one of the two-headed dragons gets too close
AMBITIONS:
• Sight - He hopes, almost futilely, that someday, he'll regain some of his vision
• Obedience - Specifically Starkad's. Though, he could die happy if he could keep her from destroying things
• Fern/Grima/Family - He doesn't want to lose the few people he ever opens up to, so he makes it his mission not to push them away
• To see a day where Starkad live the way a dragon should
-Where she can finally fly and have a family of her own
SECRETS:
• His eyesight - While not a complete secret amongst those close to him, he doesn't speak about it to just anyone. He'd prefer keeping it to himself.
• Affection - Specifically towards Starkad. While he does love his dragon, he will never admit it to anyone. (He'd never hear the end of it from his mother)
OVERALL PERSONALITY:
• Impatient - And Starkad doesn't exactly help
• Sarcastic - More so when under pressure
• Pessimist - One of the biggest differences between him and Starkad
• Introvert - He rarely lets others know what he's going through
• Tsundere - He is almost the literal definition of the word; cold/annoyed on the outside, but he's really just an unfortunate cinnamon roll
• Humble - Even at a young age, he never put himself in the limelight for things he knew he wasn't good at. He preferred staying back and letting others outdo him. It's a different story if it's about one of the few things he's actually skilled at (Like Dragonese)
• Cautious - He's not a risk-taker... usually
PHYSICAL APPEARANCE:
• Dark brown eyes - Almost appearing black if you aren't close enough
• Black hair - Goes down to the base of his neck in a single ponytail. Often times there's some loose, untied hair that lies on his face
• Height - He has yet to hit a growth spurt, so he's only slightly shorter than average
• Build - Average. He's far from lanky, but he probably wouldn't stand a chance against anyone hand-to-hand
• Scars - Since the accident, he has burn marks around his eyes. Most wouldn't notice them since he has some hair hiding them, but if you happen to be standing close enough, you can spot the burns. However, they could easily be mistaken for facial blemishes as well.
COMMON OUTFIT:
• Brown fur sleeveless shirt - There's never really a day he's seen without it
• Metal shoulder pads - Plain-looking with no decorations on them
• Leggings - During winter months, he has a pair that almost matches his vest, only being a few shades darker in appearance. In warmer weather though, he has thinner, lighter ones
• Helmet - Three separate rows of small back-facing horns
• Boots - Pale light brown boots with yak fur covering the top half
• Arm Wraps - Pale yellow fur wraps adorn his wrists on colder days
WEAPON:
• None - He could fight with a one-sided axe before the accident, but since then, he isn't usually seen with a weapon. He doesn't think a weapon would really help him anymore. (Unless he wants to look like a maniac swinging one around)
FIGHTING STYLE:
• He tries to avoid any dangerous conflicts, that is, unless Starkad manages to find herself in one. Then he'll rush in and do anything to keep her safe
FAMILY:
• Kari Steinthor (Mother)
• Shade (Mother's hobblegrunt)
• Jakob Steinthor (Father)
BIRTH PLACE: Berk
BIRTHDAY: 08/06 (June 8th)
HISTORY:
Only Jokul's mother has a dragon, but his father does know how to speak dragonese, thanks to Kari. Shade, his mother's hobblegrunt, was small enough to fit inside their home, so Jokul grew up not only listening to the voices of his parents, but the gentle dragon as well. She even cared for him alongside her rider.
Through infancy and his toddler years, he was able to babble words in Dragonese, but he only knew the basics. It wasn't until he was four that he really started learning it from his mother. By the time he was nine, he was fluent in the draconic language.
For the next five years, he either stayed home and helped his mother when she needed him, or went out to help his father. When he was free, he sat in the dragon stables and chatted with whatever dragon happened to come by. Most of the time, it was the terrible terrors that did so. They sat on his head and tugged on his clothing all the time, hoping he had food on him. Often times, he shooed them away and just listened to them from a distance.
But his quiet sanctuary changed when Jokul was 14. His mother's hobblegrunt had left with the other dragons to breed, and returned with a single daughter named Starkad. Unlike her other offspring, the little hobblegrunt took a liking to her newfound brother. Jokul couldn't really turn her down, seeing as she was family after all.
Jokul brought Starkad along with him every time he went to the stables, but a week after Snoggletog, their visit was cut short. As it so happened, a trader had come into the docks with dragon root aboard his boat, and a zippleback stumbled upon it. It wasn't long after that when it found its way to the stables where Jokul and Starkad were. Normally, the teen would've been smart and left to get help, but the baby hobblegrunt didn't know any better.
She just watched the two-headed dragon, wide-eyed. Jokul had gone back to get her out of harm's way, but it was too late. The zippleback's gas had already wrapped around his head, and got ignited not too long after. He screamed in pain, unable to see, and poor Starkad was bitten mercilessly through the webbing of her left wing.
By the time Shade barged in after hearing their screams, the damage had already been done. Defending her young had cost the older hobblegrunt her beauty, and is now left with scars littered across her face. This attack rendered Starkad flightless, and Jokul's vision impaired.
Though nearly everyone at least heard of what happened, no one knew the extent of Jokul's injury. He'd kept it a secret, even from his own family. Unfortunately for him, his mother wasn't an idiot and quickly caught on that something wasn't right, especially since he kept tripping on his way up and down the stairs.
His personality was also effected afterwards. He closed off those who he wasn't friends with, which he doubted anyone would really notice, since he didn't have many friends anyway. For the weeks following the accident, he skipped all the viking-in-training sessions, and chose to stay home. You couldn't blame him, considering he couldn't count on his sight 100% anymore.
It took months for him to fully regain confidence walking through the village square. Even now, he still has a nagging feeling that he could embarrass himself at any time if he trips over something.
To this day, he refuses to acknowledge his injury aloud to anyone. (Save for a very select few)
DRAGON BIO
NAME: Starkad
ALIASES: Stark (Jokul's nickname for her) / Starky
AGE: 2 years old
GENDER: Female
SPECIES: Hobblegrunt
LIKES:
• Fish - Give her fish and you'll be her new best friend
• Snow - She can't help herself and rolls around in it all the time
• Running - Namely while chasing something, like sheep or chickens.
• Climbing - If she isn't with Jokul, she's usually on someone's roof
• Cuddles - From anyone. Seriously. Just pat her side and she starts purring
DISLIKES:
• Boring things - It's a wonder how she and Jokul get along...
• Snoggletog - Not the holiday itself. Just the migration, because she can't follow her mother to the breeding grounds
• Bed Time - Like any child, she dreads having her mother tell her it's time to go to bed
• The Dragon Healers' Hut - Oh, she adores Luna. It's just the memories associated with bitter-tasting medicine she doesn't like
• Moody things - Anyone who can't keep their emotions in check are Starkad's worst nightmare (Namely Ulrika)
STRENGTHS:
• Emotion-detection - Because of her breed, she can feel the emotions of those around her
• Resilient - Mostly physically. She tends to crash into things when she runs around
• Agility - She's small and fast. She uses it to get her out of tight situations often
• Easily likable - She rarely comes across someone who downright hates her
WEAKNESSES:
• She can't fly - Due to her damaged wing
--She also can't swim very well because of this
• Her age - She is unable to use her breeds' emotion-controlling ability correctly until she's old enough
• Intelligence - She's still a kid, and a lot of the world is new to her. She doesn't know much and she can't always comprehend how some simple things work. While cute, sometimes this innocence could get her into trouble.
• Too trusting - Anyone potentially dangerous can easily befriend her if they're nice enough on the outside
AMBITIONS:
• To be just like her mother - She wants to protect those around her
• Surprisingly, finally being able to fly isn't one of her dreams. Having spent her entire life on the ground, she can't imagine it getting any better. She'd be perfectly happy if nothing changed and her family sticks together.
FEARS:
• Loud, sudden noises - Thunderstorms, metal clanking together, etc.
• Failing to protect - Whether it be family or not
APPEARANCE:
• Size - She's small, especially for a hobblegrunt, but that's mostly due to her age. Since she's only 2 years old, she's about the size of a yak if she holds her head high.
• Color - Her scales, while always changing, seem to stay yellow and green the longest. If you ask her why, she'd say those are her 'happy colors'. Similarly, her 'sad colors' are blue and purple, and 'angry colors' are orange and red. Of course, there are some in-between, but other than those three, most others wouldn't know what they stand for.
• Scars - Her left wing is torn beyond repair ever since the zippleback incident. Luckily, none of her bones were broken, but it still leaves her without a chance of ever flying again.
OVERALL PERSONALTY:
• Friendly - Besides livestock farmers, most who meet her would consider her a cuddly bundle of energy
• Possessive - Don't take her play-things (This includes Jokul)
• Stubborn - Once she decides on something, little can get her to change her mind.
• Optimist - It's rare for her to ever see the down side to things
• Impatient - One of the few things that she does have in common with Jokul
• Curious - Especially things she shouldn't be getting into
• Forgives easily - She'd forget what you've done the moment you give her a fish. Heck, you could've murdered someone and she'd still forgive you.
BIRTH PLACE: Dragon breeding grounds
BIRTHDAY: 19/12 (December 19th)
HISTORY:
Starkad was born into Jokul's family. Upon meeting, she bonded with him almost immediately. However, this was before Starkad learned how to talk, something that Jokul has now learned is very annoying.
When Starkad began growing, so did her energy. Even though she usually ran around the village terrorizing the chickens and sheep, Jokul was always running after her, trying to get her to stop.
As time went on, Jokul got tired of chasing her, and decided just to follow the destruction she was bound to leave behind. After getting her injury, Starkad didn't let it stop her. She could, after all, still run after the livestock and annoy Jokul.
