Iridescent Ironbeak
Larger Version Here
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:
The Ironbeak is a bi-pedal dragon about the size of a deadly nadder, if not smaller. It has two large claws on each of its front legs, and four on the hind legs. Though the shade is different among individuals, its scales are always iridescent. Their wings consist of thick, heavy skin, with a leather-like feel to them. The color is usually a desaturated version of their overall body color.
Their heads are narrow and box shaped with two large, smooth horns jutting out above the eyes, and one right above it's nose.
Unlike most breeds, the Iridescent Ironbeak also differs between gender. A male will have a larger nose horn, as well as a row of spines going up its legs. The biggest notable difference however, would probably be the horns coming from behind it's eyes. If female, they will be facing backward, like most other dragons, but males will have half-moon shaped horns facing frontwards.
TYPICAL BEHAVIOR:
Usually quiet and reserved. They won't mind the presence of a human, in fact, some Ironbeaks are found sniffing around human houses with curiosity. It'll take a lot to get these docile dragons to attack. Even fully trained ones can be scared senseless if you sneak up directly behind them (Which takes some talent seeing as they have perfect hearing). Then you'd better hope they only blind you with their fire and flee.
Sometimes these dragons can be found in very small groups consisting of immediate family, such as a mated a pair with their hatchlings. If you happen to find such a group… run. The parents are very protective of their young, considering they only have one or two every year.
ABILITIES:
As their name states, their large beaks can crush most anything from nuts to bones.
Their fire exits from their mouth almost like sparks, similar to a Nadder's flame. And though it isn't very hot, it's as bright as the sun. They use this to blind attackers to make a quick getaway.
Males can use their frontward facing horns to charge into attackers, or a rival male
Despite its bad eyesight, the Ironbeak has no problems using it's nose to find whatever it's looking for. And if it's hunting, it can also pinpoint prey scurrying around using it's acute hearing.
DRAWBACKS:
If their body temperature reaches a certain point, they will go into a coma-like sleep until it is warmer.
Though they aren't lazy, during most of the day, they bask in the sunlight. When they are in the bliss-like state brought by the heat of the sun, they are prime targets for larger predators.
Because of how few digits they have on their wings, they are easily rendered flightless
They can't swim. Their wings are too thick to displace enough water fast enough.
Their sight isn't the best, but that's why they aren't nocturnal
They don't have much armor. This is why they easily get scared when someone sneaks up on them.
TRAINING METHODS:
Though most dragons would respond to being given food, an Ironbeak will not. They don't usually see food as an offer, and instead, more of a refusal to eat the food yourself.
Because of their calm behavior, they are the easiest dragon to get close to in the wild, but they aren't the easiest to befriend. You can pet them, and give them all the food you want, but the most effective way to gain their trust, is to not actually touch them.
Instead, just talk to them. Despite the odd method, these dragons prefer having a rider with a personality to match their own. If you're lucky enough to find one who takes a liking to you, they'll probably follow you home, no matter how far away it is.
HABITAT:
Because of their diet, they can easily move from place to place without any trouble if food supply runs low. They've also adapted to surviving without flying. Because of how easily they may be rendered grounded for life, they try to only fly in case of emergencies.
They aren't usually found in forests because of their sensitive wings. Instead, they prefer wide open areas where no one can sneak up on them, and even though they can't swim, beaches and coastlines are the places you'll find them most often, usually sunning themselves.
And they tend to hunt for berries and nuts at the edge of forests. This is also the perfect place for them to gather foliage to cover themselves overnight.
They're not uncommon, but they're a rare creature to spot in Berk, because they're aren't many open places there. You'd probably have to travel elsewhere to find one more easily.
DIET:
Omnivore
They prefer Nuts/Berries
Fish/Meat
Pretty much anything else they can find. Sometimes they scavenge off leftovers other dragons haven't eaten
