Species name: Slimy Sucker
Class: Tidal
Images:
Physical Description:
Overall Appearance:
Slimy Suckers are slightly smaller than a Terrible Terror, and are much more irritating, though for very different reasons. They have a very slick appearance from their moist scales, which are extremely thin. Their belly will always be a lighter colour than the rest of the dragon.
While there’s always differences between baby and adult dragons, Slimy Suckers go through drastic changes as they age, which will be noted after the adult description.
Head
Eyes bulge out on either side of their head, and can be either yellow, red, or orange. When something catches their interest, such as food, their irises can become so large that their eyes can appear to be completely black.
They have a single thin horn sticking out the tip of their nose, the females having a much longer one compared to the males. They have a nostril on both sides of their nose.
They’re capable of opening their wide mouth 180 degrees, within contains hundreds of sharp teeth that it uses to keep a hold of it’s host.
Both sides of it’s head have four specialized fin frills which are used to detect subtle vibrations in the water. They can still do this in air, but not as effectively.
Limbs
Each of it’s feet come equipped with five clawless, webbed fingers which are enlarged at the tips. It has four lean flexible legs, with the back ones being much longer and more powerful — this helps aid in their swimming. On land, it’s capable of jumping quickly from one spot to the next, and also climbing just about any surface. Due to how soft and squishy their feet are, they’re extremely hard to hear on land.
Body
It’s short body is usually lean and streamlined. The only time it’s not is when the Slimy Sucker has just finished feeding, since they like to gorge themselves until they’re completely full.
Wings and Tail
The main source of their speed is it’s long tail, which it moves similarly to an eel (possibly another reason other dragons don’t like them). It has two long fin-like wings which it uses mainly to steer it through water.
While capable of flight, it’s not as fast as it is in water. The fastest speed it can ever get in the air is a result of launching itself from the water at top speed. After that initial speed boost, it’s slower speeds from there.
Colouration
The Slimy Sucker comes mainly in blues, but have also been seen in greens, purples, and reds. While they all have various black splotchy patterns (similar to poison dart frogs), the females have more black coverage — sometimes covering the entirety of their legs.
Younger Dragons
When Slimy Suckers first hatch, they’re missing parts of their anatomy that the adults have. Most notably their legs don’t exist at all, and their horn is also non-existant. Since they haven’t grown their lungs yet, they must stay in water in order to survive. They have gills just behind where their head frills are. The frills are really big for their size, but eventually they will grow into them. Their eyes are also enormous. Two things are the same as the adults though — they can fly with their fin-like wings and their mouth is filled with hundreds of sharp teeth. Their colouration is also much different, all of them being a dull greyish brown colour.
As the hatchling grows older, they’ll start growing their limbs. First their back legs will grow in, followed by the front. Once their nose horn starts growing is an indication that they’ll soon be able to leave the water. Their colour will also slowly brighten up, and they’ll start bearing the black splotches found on the adults.
As they approach breeding age, their gills will begin to shrink, and their lungs will begin to grow. They’ll soon have no sign of their dull colours, instead they’ll show their blues, greens, purples and reds. No sign of gills is indication that the dragon is fully grown, and is now capable of terrorizing the creatures of the land.
Typical Behaviour:
The Slimy Sucker is a very nervous dragon species and prefer to live on their own, though occasionally they’ll travel in small groups. Their nervousness is a good thing though considering their feeding habits often involve drinking the blood of other creatures, which include other dragons.
Their breeding season is very chaotic and loud, this is because both the males and females take part in fighting. While the males have a screaming match with each other to see who can fertilize a batch of eggs, the females will use their horns to fight for the best places to lay their eggs.
The eggs are laid in the hundreds in water, and also have a very soft and see-through shell (if you can even call it that). Once the eggs have been fertilized, the Slimy Sucker’s will cover up the eggs with random plant matter before they go their separate ways. Due to this, they’re born ready to take care of themselves, some even opportunistically cannibalizing other young Slimy Suckers.
While a sense of family is unknown to the dragon, they do understand the concept of friendship… or at least alliances.
Abilities:
The origins of the name likely comes from what it’s known for — sucking. Once it sucks to the point where it’s teeth dig deeply into the skin, it becomes difficult to remove a feeding Slimy Sucker from it’s victim, unless you poke it in the eyes or kill it. In fact, it’s suction can be too effective. This is where it’s shot comes into play.
Their feeding won’t always go unnoticed, and since their teeth can really dig into the victim this means it will take a while to dislodge themselves. In an emergency, they’ll actually blast away from whatever they’re feeding on so they can make their escape. This made it difficult to identify the flame type, but eventually it was found that it’s a sudden burst of steam, like an exploding geyser.
To aid in finding prey, they have eight specialized head fins that detect vibrations in the water. While able to use them also in the air, it’s not as effective.
Their slimy skin has a special property to it that causes numbing on contact. This is to keep their host from noticing them, allowing for longer feeding time. The concentration is much stronger in their feet — in fact, the only areas without this numbing property are the top of it’s head and it’s back. Makes sense considering these don’t come into contact with their host. It should be noted that after the numbing has worn off, itching will follow soon after.
Despite the lack of claws, these dragons are capable of climbing just about any surface, even on ceilings if they so desired.
Their blood has been known to sooth any stomach upsets. Good luck getting your hands on any! They won’t let you get it easily.
Drawbacks:
Already at a disadvantage due to their small stature, their specialized scales (if you can call it that) makes them extremely squishy. Unlike other dragons, they’re also more prone to burns.
They also have a shot limit of one, which is only really effective at extremely close range.
Any cut damage to it’s mouth will drastically affect it’s ability to eat anything. The break in skin will affect it’s suction ability, it might not even be able to grip a new host, let alone drink their blood. A Slimy Sucker that’s unable to use it’s suction is basically doomed to starve to death.
Their mobility greatly depends on how much it’s eaten. An airborne target being the worst for the dragon, with it’s flying ability reduced to the point where it’s only capable of gliding to safety.
With its eyes located on either side of their head, the Slimy Sucker has an overall good view of it's suroundings. However if it were perfect then they wouldn't be as endangered as they are. Slimy Suckers will never look for what is right over top of them (relative to their backs). This blindspot is what has resulted in long necked dragons, such as Scauldrons, getting a free snack to get rid of the parasitic dragon.
Training Methods:
Since these dragons are rather despised, you have to prove to it that you will not bring harm to it. To do this you must feed it blood. It’s highly advised that you don’t use your own, even if you are exceptionally large, because they could potentially drink you dry (and now it has a taste for human blood, good job!).
Instead it’s recommended that you bring it a bucket of blood instead, any animal will do. When just starting out, do not watch it as it feeds, since it’s instinct to flee will kick in the moment eye-contact is made.
After about a week, you may start sneaking glances at it as it feeds. If it begins backing away, you may need to try for another week.
If there’s no blood available to you, you may substitute it with a large fresh fish.
Eventually the Slimy Sucker will realize you aren’t a threat to it, and congratulations! You now have an itchy little companion to love and care for. Just hope that they aren’t a female unless you want thousands of baby Suckers flopping all over the place.
Habitat: This species of dragon will live anywhere where there’s a source of water. While they can’t leave the water initially, as the dragon matures they’re capable of living out of the water, though they can live their whole lives without leaving if they choose.
In the past, these dragons used to be as easily found as Terrible Terrors. Their population being kept in check by other dragons, who hated the little guys and would kill them on sight. They would sometimes go after Vikings who strayed too far from their village while fishing as well. This however is what eventually became their downfall. Previously just an itchy nuisance, someone discovered that the Slimy Sucker skin also temporarily removed sensation from where it was used.
This made the dragon desirable for healers who would use this to help patients with terrible wounds. Warriors would also participate in blood baths just before a battle, to give them an edge against their enemies.
Vikings began capturing the dragons in larger and larger amounts, making their numbers plummet exponentially to the point of near extinction.
Those that managed to survive the massacre eventually developed an instinctual fear of humans, an instinct being passed on to each new generation. Of course, they still get caught by boats every few months. To a desperate dragon, the boat just seems like a large dragon until they get too close to realize it’s actually not a dragon at all.
Diet: Lots of blood and the occasional fish.
